Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
12 Wilson St.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My book is My Life at Sweetbrier-A Life Changed by Horses. It is based on my personal journey from a handicapped child to an equestrian champion. My parents always encouraged me to follow my dreams. Instead of saying “You can’t become a champion, my dad said, “You can do anything you want if you persevere.” It was his decision that changed my life after he was told I would never walk. He chose to teach me to ride horses.
I feel this story will inspire children and prove they can beat the odds if they refuse to quit.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No, I can’t think of any.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I was raised with horses so I loved stories like Black Beauty, or Pat’s Harmony. I enjoy stories where the underdog beats the odds. But also I like reading funny stories with helpful messages like the George and Martha series.
What are you working on now?
I’ve just finished revising my book, “Charlene the Star and Hattie’s Heroes.” It’s a children’s story told by the animal characters. In this adventure, the animals seek a new career where they can help their friends. Some of the characters are, Charlene the Star, a talented horse, Elliott, a confident dog, Wooliam, a kind sheep, and Hattie, an adorable chicken who loves wearing pretty bonnets.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use Facebook and twitter, but I also have a Book2look widget for my book, “My Life at Sweetbrier-A Life Changed by Horses.” I use Pinterest to a lesser extent, in addition to my website.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I believe if writing is your passion, you should pursue it. Focus on the positive when you can. Surround yourself with those who support your efforts, but always welcome advice from other authors. Be sure each book you present reflects your best efforts. Revising and editing is essential. Also, remember that marketing is an ongoing project.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Always persevere and never give up on your dreams because you never know what you can do until you try. Sometimes you can even surprise yourself by your results.
What are you reading now?
I am often reading and reviewing books for other authors. I’ve recently finished “Lucy, the Talented Terrier,” by Janice Spina.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I hope to publish my first picture book later this year.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d bring any books that would be encouraging and share a positive message. I think encouragement can make a huge difference in one’s life.
