The story is about a little girl Lucky Atlega “Sky” Molapo born and bred at Mpumalanga Province, Kwa-Ndebele in a small village called Makometsane. The only daughter of Sefako Molapo and Baby Molapo, they loved her so much and always wish she could one day be a teacher.
Lucky also loved by the community and friends because of the overwhelming respect she had for people, whether you younger, same age or elderly. She became a friend with Lebogang Monkoe the last-born daughter of Jankie Monkoe and Manana Monkoe from child wood; both were neighbours but became close friends. They also became sisters because Lucky was the only child at home and Lebogang was a last born with two older brothers that did not play or give her attention, is when Lucky and Lebo behaved like sisters from different mothers.
Lucky always wanted to pursue music as career but her parents wished she could be a teacher one day and had to lie to them after signing a record deal with Dion record. She left to record an album telling her parents that she got a job at a Private School in Pretoria and later they heard Lucky on National Radio interviews promoting the new album. Her Primary School Principal Noko and Choir teacher Moloko Makgoba discovered the music talent she had in a School choir. She first started singing at Primary School choir under teacher Moloko Makgoba and her first performance was at Khamani Primary in Marapyane village during school choir competitions. Teacher Makgoba was the person thought Sky to write music in Grade 7 and to sing but Lucky’s voice was a singing velvety voice. Lucky was not aware she had a singing talent focusing more on education because she wanted to make her parents happy and became a teacher as they wish. She worked so hard at school producing good results and showing her leadership skills but developing the love of music at the same time. She continue to write and sing at High School winning awards, but at Grade 12 was focusing more on education passing her matric with distinction. Lucky received the name “SKY” at High School from a boy called Bongani Mahlangu that later became a friend with Lucky and Lebo, the name is from a phrase: “SKY IS THE LIMIT”. Bongani gave her the street name because Lucky was a big dreamer, always wanted to live big fat life without limits.
Both sisters went to KwaNdebele College and furthered their studies to be teachers but she was still having the love of music in her heart. Lucky’s parents saved money to pay for her college tuition but with the help of the community Chief, he instructed his right hand man tell the community to donate for Lucky because she was the only learner at Makometsane and the first to pass with distinction. At college became a friend with Popi Skosana, Lerato Ranaka, Jovan Makola, Collen Masango, and Itumeleng Manaka together with Lebo and Bongani from High School. They called themselves Group 8 and became the notorious group at college, her friends are the ones that supported his music talent and persuaded her to continue music as career. Lucky was not aware it was possible to pursue music as career until she got her first gig at the tavern next to the college called “Mzala” owning by a business man Gift “Mo’Russia” Mofokeng. She received a payment of R500 every gig and start to focus more on music but at the same time working hard to get her Diploma in teaching.
Vincent “Mo’Russia” introduced Lucky to Dion record boss Hunter Dion during her last year at College, Hunter visited “Mzala” when Lucky was performing and offered her a record deal that came with packages. She recorded her first album with Dion record called “Motherland Queen” that sold platinum, the second album “Good morning” sold platinum, and a single “Be happy Mama”. She became Billionaire in a short period of time but later started her own label “LAM” record after Dion record signed another artist called Sabina Kgole that never get along with Lucky. Sabina was a big competition of Lucky in the music industry and Hunter gave her more attention than Lucky at Dion record, another thing that made Lucky angry was Hunter signed another artist without her knowledge. Hunter never thought was necessary to inform Lucky because she does not have shares in Dion records. Majority of artist that recorded at Dion records went to sign record deal with LAM records, even some of the best workers like Peter “Blaza” Masondo who was Lucky’s producers moved to LAM records. The conflict got worse after Sabina record songs that insult Lucky indirect then she also responded recording an album called “Hillbrow life” sold double platinum. Late 1999 was shot and killed at the age of 24 years by unknown killers in front the gate of her Water Kloof home, everyone including her family, friends and the media surprised by her death asking lot of question about who can be a possible suspect of her murder. The case was a cold case because Police had not evidence to prosecute suspects; the first suspect was Dion Hunter after Lucky left Dion record to start her own Label. The Book will inspire the youth to work hard and fulfil their dreams, they must be focused because is possible and no dreams are big or small.
