Interview With Author Deborah Klee
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Deborah Klée is an award-winning author of page-turning, uplifting stories about friendship, community, and emotional courage. After a career in health and social care: an occupational therapist, health service manager, freelance journalist, and management consultant, she now enjoys writing happy endings for her protagonists.
Deborah lives on the Essex coast, where she loves to walk by the sea or the surrounding countryside filling her pockets with shells, and acorns, and her head with stories.
Four books now published. Busy writing a trilogy set in a N.Yorks village that was submerged to create a reservoir.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Last Act
Although this is the 4th book to be published; it was the first one I wrote. The story has changed considerably since the first draft more than 10 years ago. It was inspired by a creative writing exercise to write a 5k story using the prompt Mirrors. The 5k became the outline for a novel. Up until then I had not considered writing a novel a possibility.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don't think so but I must always write with my favourite pen.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Jojo Moyes, Anne Pratchett, Rachel Joyce
What are you working on now?
A trilogy set in a N.Yorks village that was submerged to create a reservoir in 1966. I wrote the first as a standalone but was inspired top continue the story. It is the first time I have written a sequel and so I am learning new skills.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Making meaningful connections with readers either in person when I talk about my books or through social media. Nothing beats the personal touch and I love getting to know my readers!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write from your heart. Love what you do. Be patient.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Do not attach yourself to one particular outcome be open to new possibilities and network, network, network! You are sowing seeds of opportunity.
What are you reading now?
The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell.
What’s next for you as a writer?
My latest novel The Last Act is published on 1st August 2023. I have several face to face engagements in the coming weeks and I'm plotting and planning another novel. So, exciting times.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Bel Canto by Anne Pratchett, The House on the Strand by Daphne Du Maurier, All of Howard Springs books.
