Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am the author of eleven books. I have been writing since the age of six. It was something I always did. By the time I was a teenager, I was writing poetry and performing in front of audiences. I wrote my first book after my husband brought me a computer to stop me from taking up space in our closets with the notebooks of stories that I had hand written.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is: My Man, Your Man, Everybody’s Man. The story came to me just like the others and the characters told the story. If you’ve read any of my other books, you know this story has a compelling twist.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I never force a story. If the characters don’t tell the story then I will not write it. All of my stories are character driven. It is amazing how the characters unfold as I type. They tell the story and sometimes I am surprised at the twists and turns I go on with my characters.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Langston Hughes. I was reading his poetry when I was a little girl. His poetry was so expressive and colorful. I’ve read all of his poems!
What are you working on now?
Currently, I working on an upcoming horror movie: Lake House which was written, directed and produced by my husband: Danny L. Scott.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
There are so many websites to promote on. You have to find the one that is most effective for you and your message. For me it is Twitter along with my Facebook Fanpages.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Close your ears to all negativity and distractions. Negativity can discourage you and you need all the support you can get as a newbie and even an author with books under your belt. Focus only on things that are uplifting and people who are offering encouraging advice. Study. Never get complacent and believe you have it all figured out. Your writing and your brand may suffer if you do. Write every day. By doing so you will grow and it will strengthen you as a writer. And lastly, never give up. Things rarely happen overnight. Keep going and work hard on your craft.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To develop crocodile skin. Not everyone is going to like you or your work. Concentrate on the people who do.
What are you reading now?
I don’t have much time to read due to my hectic schedule. However, I do read the bible every day.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Only Jehovah God knows. I don’t place myself in a box. If I want to do something, I try it. Period.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
My bible. my thesaurus, and a dictionary.
