Interview With Author Denise Colby
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Denise M. Colby loves history and finds herself contemplating how it was to live in the 1800’s. She only sits still when reading a book, watching movies with her family, or taking in the latest musical theater show. She resides in Southern California where she enjoys date nights with her husband at their happy place. Every year Denise chooses a word to focus on. She loves to share her learnings about that word throughout the year on her blog and social media. Denise has written 2 books and 1 novella (which publishes in November).
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
When Plans Go Awry was my debut novel published in June 2024. It was inspired by a visit during my son’s fourth grade field trip to the one room schoolhouse in Sacramento. The rules and way of life back in the 1860s were so different, and an idea was born. My Best-laid Plans series is about three women who come to California to teach. And their plans all change due to a variety of circumstances, the most of which they find their happily ever after.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When something isn’t coming to me, I wander away from my desk to let things process. And eat lots of dark chocolate chips right from the bag.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Karen Witemeyer, Mary Connealy, Deanne Gist, Lacy Williams, Susan May Warren, and so many other authors who write wonderful stories.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on the last book in the series – A Whole New Plan.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Still learning and figuring this out. Definitely word of mouth. Awesome gang! I’m finding my Pinterest posts get some visibility. I try to put my book everywhere I can. I’m partnering with other offers for newsletter swaps as well.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Join a local or online writing group in your genre. Write a little every day. Be open to feedback. And don’t give up. It took me over twelve years to publish my first book in between being a mom, wife, volunteer in several school groups, and going back to work full time.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
see advice for new authors.
What are you reading now?
My critique partner’s debut novel, Perfect, by Kimberly Keagan.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I hope to add on to this series. A possible Christmas story, and other ideas are floating around in my head and can’t wait to work on them.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Definitely my Bible, a journal, and two new books by my favorite authors so I have something new to read.
