Interview With Author Dennis Mbogori
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Dennis Mutuma Mbogori. I was born in Nakuru, Kenya, part of the Rift Valley Province. I am the first-born son in a family of five children. I spent my formative years in the vibrant city of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. During my second year of college, I relocated to the United States of America, where I changed my major after a couple of years.
I graduated from Beulah Heights Bible College (now Beulah Heights University) in Atlanta, Georgia, with a Bachelor’s degree in biblical studies. While at Beulah Heights, I encountered my mentor, Dr. John C. Maxwell, through his book The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. This book, part of my coursework, played a significant role in my journey toward becoming an author.
I have authored two books and am a proud member of the Leadership Certified Team as a Coach, Speaker, and Trainer. In addition to my writing and coaching endeavors, I am an ordained minister and the Senior Pastor of Redeemer Oasis Church in Marietta, Georgia. I enjoy serving alongside my wife, Sarah Mutuma, our church’s co-pastor and worship leader.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book, “Affirm Your Greatness: Harnessing the Power of Positive Affirmations,” is my second publication, released in 2024. This follows my debut book, “Got Goals? Inspirational Quotes for Life, ” published in 2020. Currently, “Got Goals?” is undergoing a revision and expansion to include more short stories and practical applications of the quotes.
Affirm Your Greatness was inspired by my overcoming years of negative self-talk. Throughout this journey, I discovered the transformative power of Personal Growth and Development materials, including books, motivational audiobooks, and videos. These resources played a pivotal role in reshaping my mindset and empowering me to harness the power of positive affirmations.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Having published two books, I’ve realized that inspiration can strike any moment. Creative ideas often emerge unexpectedly, whether at work, while spending time with family and friends, or while enjoying my quiet time during prayer and Bible study. When that happens, I jot down the thought or idea on paper or in the notes app on my phone. This habit helps me capture and preserve those fleeting moments of inspiration, allowing me to develop them further when I write.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I would begin with the Bible, which has profoundly shaped my life and perspective. Additionally, “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by my mentor, Dr. John C. Maxwell, has significantly influenced my journey. Other notable influences include the works of Napoleon Hill, Steven Furtick, and Mark Batterson, among many others. These authors have provided valuable insights and inspiration, fueling my passion for personal development and leadership.
What are you working on now?
I am finishing a revision and update to my first book, Got Goals? Quotes and Inspiration for Life. This revised edition will include more short stories and practical applications of the quotes. Additionally, I am preparing to release and promote my second book, Affirm Your Greatness: Harnessing the Power of Positive Affirmations. These projects keep me busy, but I’m excited about their impact on readers seeking personal growth and development.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My best methods for promoting my books include leveraging social media platforms, spreading the word through personal and professional networks, and utilizing AwesomeGang.com. These strategies have effectively reached a broad audience and generated interest in my work.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just get started and do not procrastinate, waiting for the “right time.” The perfect moment may never come, but the act of writing itself can lead you to discover your voice and refine your ideas. Embrace the journey with all its challenges and triumphs, and trust that with persistence, your efforts will pay off.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard is: “When inspiration hits, write it down.” Capturing those fleeting moments of creativity can make all the difference, ensuring that valuable ideas are never lost and can be developed further when the time is right.
What are you reading now?
I’m more of an audiobook person. Currently, I’m listening to High Road Leadership by John C. Maxwell. This audiobook is packed with valuable insights on leading with integrity and making ethical decisions, which resonate deeply with my journey and values.
What’s next for you as a writer?
To keep on learning and growing. I believe that continuous self-improvement is essential for any writer. By embracing new experiences, gaining fresh perspectives, and expanding my knowledge, I can continue to evolve and refine my craft. This commitment to growth fuels my passion for writing and enables me to create meaningful and impactful content for my readers.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take three or four books with me, I would choose:
1. The Bible – For spiritual guidance and inspiration.
2. “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill – For its timeless wisdom on personal achievement and success.
3. “The Richest Man in Babylon” by George S. Clason – For its valuable lessons on financial principles and wealth-building.
These books provide a balanced mix of spiritual nourishment, personal development, and practical financial wisdom to keep me grounded and motivated in such a challenging situation.
