Interview With Author Dennis Stuempfle
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a retired businessman living in Coastal NC. Several years ago, I wrote a political thriller, Acts of Sedition, under the pen name Dennis Stephan. A couple of years ago, I decided to write a few children’s books about a bunny named Tchotchke.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My newest book is the fourth book in that series, and it’s a Christmas book titled “A Christmas without Reindeer – No Toys from Santa?” My grandchildren love Christmas, and I thought it would be fun to carry the Tchotchke series into the holiday season with a Christmas story. I would have hesitated to write this, but I have a phenomenal illustrator, Nina Mkhoiani from the country of Georgia, whom I hired through fiverr.com.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t have any unusual habits other than doing what many authors do. I get up in the middle of the night with an idea for a book or a part of the story and I immediately write that down.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve always loved The Night Before Christmas but the authors that I read include the early Nelson DeMille novels and more recently several Kristin Hannah novels.
What are you working on now?
I’ve been writing poetry since my early college days, and I have about 80 poems. They don’t fit the category of a continuing theme like many poets are writing today, which is why I haven’t published them yet. Some would be categorized as love poems, others are children’s poems, and I’d classify some as macabre.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve used kidswrds.com, children’s book review and onlinebookclub.com
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My first novel, Acts of Sedition, started with an idea. I never thought of publishing a novel. I presented the idea to my son, an aspiring writer. He didn’t have the time to write the book because of other commitments, so I decided to do it myself. I wrote the children’s books because I wanted to leave something for my grandchildren. I’m not planning to go anywhere, but they were my inspiration.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you believe in your subject matter and your ability, don’t let some apprehension stop you.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading a novel called “Home Front” written by Kristen Hannah.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ve started a few new poems and am considering spending some time organizing all my poems into a compendium.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
They Marched into Sunlight by David Maraniss, Up Country by Nelson DeMille, With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge, and The Women by Kristin Hannah
