Interview With Author Diane Bator
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a Canadian Mystery author who has written and published 18 novels – with several others at various levels of completion!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Diamond on the Rocks, Book 2 in my A.J. Cadell Mystery series.
AJ’s story was inspired by a place I used to go camping on the shores of Lake Huron in Ontario. What if a budding author was invited to be a Writer-in-Residence in a place she never heard of and discovered family she and her sister had long forgotten?
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I love using pen and paper for rough drafts before typing them in AND print my manuscripts off when they’re about 3/4 done so I can read them in print and complete the book.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Janet Evanovich, Lillian Braun Jackson, Agatha Christie, the list goes on! I was a huge Hardy Boys fan as a kid and got caught reading Sidney Sheldon not much after that!
What are you working on now?
I started creating a couple of fun new characters – Mike and Kara – best friends who own a bakery called Mikara and are dragged into a murder mystery via their competition after an event at the local library.
I’m also editing a book I released a few years ago, All That Shimmers, that I will relaunch in April.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook and Instagram. I’m not big on Tik Tok, but I love doing interviews and podcasts. I’d still like to start my own podcast one day soon!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write the book!!
Don’t overthink it. Don’t ask people for advice.
Just write it!!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Find your tribe! There are writers everywhere. They’re like dandelions!
Look for a writing group either online or in person and learn all you can.
What are you reading now?
A book called Bodyfulness by Christine Caldwell, Ph. D. for a course on Somatic Yoga I’m taking. I got my Yoga 200 certification last fall and am taking this course as well as Meditation, which definitely helps calm that Monkey Mind! Now I just need to get back to writing!
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m planning to relaunch All That Shimmers in April.
Then working on Mikara and a book called Sunflower House for later this year – OR to submit to a publisher or agent and see what they have to say.
I left my previous publisher in 2024 and started my own imprint, Escape With a Writer Publishing, but have only been using it to put out my own projects for now.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
At least 2 blank notebooks and a pack of pens.
Writing Down the Bones, by Natalie Goldberg
On Writing, by Stephen King
Both books I highly recommend especially to new authors.
