Interview With Author Diego Balasquide
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a huge movie fan. It’s where most of my artistic inspiration comes from. I pursued a career in film, but ultimately it didn’t make me happy, and I’ve found that writing books is my real passion.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is The Silent War. It’s book two in my fantasy western series, Scales of the West. Many of the ideas were inspired by iconic movie and TV villains: The Joker from The Dark Knight, Alonzo Harris from Training Day, and Walter White from Breaking Bad.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My writing process is pretty weird: First I outline the story and develop the characters as I go. The next stage is to write a screenplay. I have trouble filling in the blanks sometimes as I write the prose, so it helps me to have a detailed outline of how each scene plays out. Then I move on to the last stage, which is turning the story into prose.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve read a few books here and there, but I wouldn’t say any of them have really influenced my writing. I kind of just let my stories speak for themselves.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on the next Scales of the West book! This one will have a story that depicts dual timelines. I’m finding it to be an interesting challenge.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Goodreads groups, Fiverr influencers and my own social media pages have been my primary avenues to promote my work. I’m always searching for a better way to put myself out there.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
There is no correct or incorrect way! In my experience, I’ve found that experimenting with how you approach your writing until you find what’s best for you is how you develop a great book.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I forget who said it, but: “Always try your best, that way you have no reason to blame yourself.”
What are you reading now?
A Sound of Thunder and other collected works by Ray Bradbury.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ve got a few ideas for a new story. I might try and develop an action comedy series next.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Disaster Artist by Greg Sestero
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
