Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a former pastor, an insider who was privy to many of the escapades and shenanigans employed to build congregations calling it church; to build hope and call it faith. I quit. However, instead of tossing the whole package, I committed to an objective read of the Scriptures.
One day when I was demanding answers of God, the tables turned; God became the inquisitor and I the examined one. As I answered His questions I came to a startling conclusion, “The Bible is ruining my religion.”
Then, my education began . . .
I have written three books – my fourth, an autobiography, will be published in March 2015
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Think Red Ink” I became fascinated with the words of Jesus Christ (printed in red ink in many Bibles) and how the lifestyle they provoke.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I look for inspiration. My first book, “The Questions of Jesus” was the result of 4 years of personal meditations/devotions. http://www.amazon.com/Questions-Jesus-Don-Harris/dp/097928290X This book is not available in kindle format, however, an email request with your mailing address to Don@DonCHarris.com will get you a free audio book. 🙂
My objective when speaking and in writing is to utilize gestalt. The mysteries of God are not to be learned academically, therefore, it is my goal to allow facts to become the connect-the-dot tapestry of God’s truth.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The first book I read as a child was the Bible. Although I don’t hold a reckless view of infallibility of inerrancy of the Bible – I feel that it is a valuable record of the exemplars of faith. My appreciation of the Bible is not demonstrated by the liturgical adjectives that I use to describe it, but by the fact that I live by it.
Jesus said about His words what can be said by no other, “My words are Spirit and they are Life.” I believe Him. Some of the authors who inspire me – Abraham, Jeremiah, David, Job, John and Paul; but when you get the red letters (the words of Jesus) right, it ALL makes sense.
What are you working on now?
I am developing a On Faith/On Prayer flip print book. These books will also be available individually in the eBook market.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Patience and hard work… that’s all I know for promotion of books.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
This is borrowed advice . . . “If you have any young friends who aspire to become writers, the second greatest favor you can do them is to present them with copies of ‘The Elements of Style’. The first greatest, of course, is to shoot them now, while they’re happy.” (Source: The new edition of The Elements of Style also includes a compilation of praise for the book from writers over the years. Wallraff’s favorite remark is from Dorothy Parker, who reviewed the guide for Esquire magazine.)
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If what you believe is not true, do you want to know it?
What are you reading now?
“Think Red Ink”… is there no end to editing for typos? LOL, it’s a good life!
What’s next for you as a writer?
I am preparing the “Think Red Ink” eBook and audio book.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, The Questions of Jesus, Disappointed with God by Phillip Yancey, Speaking of Jesus by Carl Medearis, Shakespeare,
