Interview With Author Donovan Todd
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
As an author driven by a fervent desire to aid teenagers in creating a resilient and unyielding mindset, I’ve crafted a literary work, entitled “Stoicism for Teens,” which endeavors to familiarize the youthful demographic with the classical philosophy of Stoicism and to equip them with practical methods to integrate its wisdom into their experiences. My aspiration is to arm teens with the necessary skills to confront life’s tribulations and to attain tranquility and satisfaction.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book, ‘Stoicism for Teens’, was inspired by my own journey as a teenager grappling with anxiety and insecurity; it was through discovering Stoicism that I found peace and developed a stronger mindset.
I wrote this book with the goal of sharing my learning with other teens and helping them develop similar skills. I believe that Stoicism, with its ancient wisdom, can still be highly relevant and impactful for today’s young people.
The philosophy of Stoicism can offer a guide for teens as they navigate the complexities of adolescence. My hope is that this book will provide the necessary tools for building resilience and achieving inner peace, just as it did for me.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t have any unusual writing habits, but, I truly believe that carving out a designated time and tranquil environment for writing is a crucial component of effective writing. Interrupting the flow of words with periodic interludes, be it a stroll, a spell of contemplation, or a dalliance with artistic pursuits such as sketching or musical expression, serves to rejuvenate the mind and invigorate the imagination.
However, above all else, I maintain that the paramount factor in producing quality prose lies in completely immersing oneself in the act of composition and allowing the imaginative faculties to run rampant. Irrespective of whether one subscribes to idiosyncratic writing practices, the essential aspect is to determine what method best suits one’s style and to remain steadfast in its adherence.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have been greatly influenced by several authors and books in my journey to understand and apply Stoicism to my life. “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius was one of the first books I read on the subject and its teachings have had a profound impact on my understanding of Stoicism. The teachings of Epictetus, a slave-turned-philosopher who lived in Ancient Greece, have also been instrumental in my growth as a Stoic. More recently, Ryan Holiday’s book “The Obstacle is the Way” has been a great source of inspiration for me. These are just a few examples of the many authors and books that have influenced me on my Stoic journey.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on a new project, but I am keeping the details under wraps for now. I like to keep things a little bit mysterious and build anticipation for my work. All I can say is that it is something that I am very passionate about and I believe that it will make a positive impact in the world. I can’t wait to share it with everyone, but for now, you’ll just have to stay tuned to see what I’m up to next!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
As an up-and-coming author, I am still in the process of learning about the best methods for promoting my books.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write about things that you are passionate about and that you know well, because this will help you stay motivated and produce work that you can be proud of.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” – Oscar Wilde
Embrace your individuality, break free from conformity’s shackles. Don’t let society’s expectations enslave you, or blind you from discovering your own unique talents. Remember, you are a one-of-a-kind gem, a valuable gem that shines brightest when it remains true to itself. Your life’s journey will be most fulfilling when you dare to be authentic, to be unapologetically you.
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” by Robin Sharma.
What’s next for you as a writer?
As a huge advocate for enhancing the lives of others, I am driven to share my wisdom and knowledge through a multitude of mediums – be it through my printed books, emails, or audiobooks. My passion lies in making a positive impact by conveying my insights in a manner that is both relatable and impactful.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
As a survivor stranded on a deserted island, I would definitely take a copy of “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius with me; it could serve as a beacon of hope for me. It emphasizes the importance of embracing the present moment and accepting what is outside of our control, has provided me with a newfound perspective on life.
I would also take “How to Survive on a Deserted Island” by Samantha Bell with me to help me survive while being stranded on a deserted island.
Lastly, I would bring “How to Draw Almost Everything: An Illustrated Sourcebook” by Chika Miyata and hope that I have a writing utensil with me. I may as well learn how to draw while I’m stuck on an island.
