Interview With Author Dr Bernard Unrau
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve penned over 100 books initially inspired by a 4 min interview of Robin Cook MD , how he penned a best seller each summer and an article in a CDA Journal ’85 ‘Dentists as Detectives’ , Michael Crichton, my mentor in medicine and writing, inspired me to thoroughly research a ‘what if worst case scenario’. Like Sir Conan Doyle I created Dr Gum a Sherlock type sleuth and my nichekname in dentistry for my ‘Gumtex’ dental surgical training sytem that sold world wide hence the nickname ‘Dr Gum’ and like Zane Grey I joked 40 years ago, I’d pen 100+ books.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Fantastic Voyage III 2nd ed. takes us where no one has gone before . The CMDF (Combined Miniaturization Deterent Forces) face their fiercest challenge, to take a crew aboard the Proteus into the US president’s heart to lase myocardially infarcted tissue, remove it then implant ‘Bucky balls’ filled with cardica stem cells and get out within 1 hour, that’s when the crew and sub begin to grow and become a threat to the human body. Initially inspired by the discovery of cardiac stem cells in c 2008 in the original Fantastic Voyage III.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No. Nose to the grindstone usually for 6 weeks initially each summer, taking breaks to eat, sleep, a little tennis or cycling until it was complete. Persistence, perseverance from the initial thoroughly researched concept which usually arose from an article, event or in discussion that inspired the story which essentially wrote itself.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
As mentioned above Robin Cook, Sir Conan Doyle, Michael Crichtion and Zane Grey.
What are you working on now?
In a state of free fall, flux, let ideas and research percolate, simmer on the back burner…until an idea gels. It’s oft a gut feeling that compels the creative juices to flow, much more difficult these days since I’ve explored, read and written so much. As Einstein said imagination is more important than knowledge for it encompasses everything yet to be discovered.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
www.caltexpress..com (my own website), Good Reads, Amazon, bookstroes in 100+ countries, intervews
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never give up. Never stop believing in yourself. You need to take the time to laser focus and concentrate and persevere. No procrastination. Just Do It!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
An interview with Robin Cook. Write very concentrated, let your character wake you up, simpley write what you see on the screen in your mind. Michale Crichton suggested ‘what if’ scenarios, what’s the worst thing that could happen in this clinic, lab or nano tech facility….Zane Grey penned 100 westerns inspired by events around him, when very few people could read let alone write, they became 100 films before Clint eastwood’s westerns. Conan Doyle created Sherlock when not another patient walked into his Opthalologic practice and later tried to kill off Sherlock for he wanted to get on with his LostWorld series is when I seriously began to think of ways to kill off Dr Gum in 80 of over 100 books I wrote.
What are you reading now?
Lot of research – Elon Musk, Mars, Space Exploration what could possibly go wrong? featured in ‘Titanpointe’, ‘Alpha and Omega’. Quantum computers, AI data centers featured in ‘Wonder Valley’. Recently inspired by hellfighters and Deep water Horizon explored the dangers of off shore drilling rgs and putting out fires in the most foridable environments…..
What’s next for you as a writer?
Book to film adaptations. Oft told by Hollywood they’d make my movie. I’ve pitched 100+ scripts (avg 20,000 words) 3700+ times, 70,000,000 words, 150,000 scenes oft ripped off, reworked, claimed as their own, seen in fims and TV series, ended up in IP theft, copyright infringement lawsuits including a contest I won in 2010, The Rom won #1 most votes and prmised to be made into a movie ($100 million dinosaur thriller). I pitched it to 20,000 paleontology offices, and spun off 6 story arcs. Universal Studio lawyers still can’t explain 127 copyright similarities/infringements scenes, dialogue etc in Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom, and Dominion. Said I’m a ‘great writer’. Who knows? maybe Fantastic Voyage III is on James Cameron radar? He’s working on a remake https://variety.com/2024/film/news/james-cameron-fantastic-voyage-remake-very-soon-1235961640/
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Comedies, the power of the mind and quantum computers to discover time travel or teleportation… you never know, the power of the mind is unfathomable….maybe think my way off the island or manifest a wife and live happily ever after in peace in paradise.
