Interview With Author Duncan Robb
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have, after many years, written one book. I’m halfway into the second and I have plans and ideas for a series that will run and run.
I’m a former pro photographer and got my inspiration for the plot of book one from my work. I’ve also been a triathlete for over 35 years and that’s influenced the book as well.
I live in rural Derbyshire in the UK with my wife and several four-legged friends.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Sharp Focus – inspired by my work at major conferences and the nefarious goings on that I imagined while shooting important people.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Like I imagine all writers, I wish I could get into the habit of writing regularly, but life gets in the way – that and six grown up children and nine grand children!
I have a standing desk and find it’s the best way to stop me nodding off after a spell of concentrated typing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
All the usual best selling suspects, Lee Child, John Grisham, Stephen King etc but also many indie authors whose books have popped up on Amazon and found their way onto my Kindle.
What are you working on now?
I working on Book two and plotting books three, four, five etc
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I had lots of success with well targeted ads on Facebook to generate a mailing list and have used FreeBooksey and Hello Books to get 4,000 downloads and a bunch of 5 star reviews.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Stick at it – It took me years to get book one finished and then several more years before I felt ready to publish.
Accept the fact that there are some people out there who may not like your book, but there will be plenty that do – think of them.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
From Stephen King’s book “Writing, a memoir”, take it seriously, if you want to be a writer, then write and don’t let anything else get in your way.
What are you reading now?
Harlan Coben’s Deal Breaker (paperback) and Robert Galbraith’s Ink Black Heart (audiobook)
What’s next for you as a writer?
More books – my aim is to get three a year published on Amazon.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
His Dark Materials (Phillip Pulman)
