Interview With Author Dylan James
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m Dylan James, author of “Brothers” and this year’s release, “Cedar Mills”.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Cedar Mills” is a sci-fi horror fiction novel, and really, it’s my love letter to the horror movies and video games I grew up on. It blends many genres including sci-fi, horror, rural suspense, detective, and crime. It’s set to release on August 1st, 2025 through Savage Realms Press.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
For anything long-form I write, the critic in my head is relentless, so my process becomes a meditative act of letting go while releasing the insecurities I have as both a writer and human being. As I’ve learned to let go with age and experience, I write a lot more efficiently than I did when I was younger. I love writing, but early on, my pursuit of some idea of “perfect” really weighed me down. To be free from that fear has opened doors for me I never thought I’d be able to open.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I would wholeheartedly say the works of Brian K. Vaughan, Christoper Golden, Max Allan Collins, Todd McFarlane, and Stephen King. Also, the lyrics of Walter Schreifels (of Quicksand and Rival Schools fame) have been just as influential. Musicians get overlooked sometimes as “writers” given the instruments and synchronicity of each, but I’ve learned a lot from lyricists who’ve really stood out to me on a personal level.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a horror novel with no true plans for it honestly. For me, writing this novel has just been an act of having fun. Maybe it’ll find a home down the line!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My best method has been making connections with people, and doing so sincerely. In the age of social media, it’s so easy to connect with other authors, bloggers, and reviewers and get to know them. I actively tune into the indie horror scene, and I love supporting other indie horror authors with work from smaller publishers.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write what you want to write and do it for you! If it’s sincere, and if writing is in your bones, great things will follow.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
As an author, definitely “less is more”. Showing, versus telling, will get you a long way.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading “With a Vengeance” by Riley Sager. I ordered an autographed copy 4 months ago, and it just came in the mail. Needless to say I’m stoked.
What’s next for you as a writer?
The continued pursuit of quality work, and a few more published titles sounds perfect to me.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Shew, that’s tough! I’d say “The Invention of Morel” by Adolfo Bioy Casares, “Quarry’s Choice” by Max Allan Collins, and “The National Baseball Hall of Fame Collection” by James Buckley Jr. Also, I might bring something by R.L. Stine for the fun and nostalgia.
