Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written several novels and a bunch of short stories; my two published books are Print In The Snow, a fairytale for adults, and Over The Hills Of Green, a magical realism novel. Both stories are set in the same world, which really is our world if you look just so.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The title of my book Over The Hills Of Green hints at both the physical place and the internal space where your dreams come true, but also to the journey you take to reach that place.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I admit to over-researching. I often get lost in the topographic maps, historic records and psychological research that goes with a story. However, once I feel I get it, I just sit down and write a pretty tight first draft.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I grew up with the Russian classics, but also the classics of fantasy and sci fi in English. My top three tend to change: for the last few years it’s been Samuel Delany, Ursula Le Guin and Octavia Butler.
What are you working on now?
I’m nearly finished with The Book of Fairfax, which is the third novel of The Green Hills trilogy. It’s historical fiction with elements of the fantastical, of course. It takes place in the 7th century Anglo-Saxon Britain.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook and Amazon advertising is key.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
The best books turn the reader into an author’s co-creator.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t condescend to your readers, respect them.
What are you reading now?
Just finished the second of the Baru Cormorant books by Seth Dickinson. Loved it.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Once I’m finished with the Green Hills trilogy, which represents a labor of love to me, I’d like to honestly try my hand at commercial genre fiction.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
That’s easy: Robinson Crusoe for basic survival, the Bible for meditation, and Silmarillion, because it really is my scripture.
