Interview With Author Ed Burley
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a guitarist turned writer born out of creative frustration during the covid pandemic lockdown.
My debut Novel Blame was released three years, its story routed in my experiences at University.
My second novel is due to be published later this year and is entitled Agency.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Agency is a crime thriller where we following British career criminals attempting to rob a care home. It is routed in both my experience working in the care industry and my love of the hit television show The Sopranos.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Before I pick up a pen, I create a playlist of songs. I then listen to this in the style of legendary producer Rick Rubin; led stretched out on the sofa with my eyes closed. It allows me to filter out the rest of the world and focus my mind on the moods and emotions I am hoping to capture in my writing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many. As a child I was enchanted by Roald Dahl and C.S Lewis which then evolved into Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. I then discovered comics books in my teens, so emersed myself in the writings of Alan Moore and Grant Morrison, which led me to Steven King. After that came Mario Puzo, Bret Easton Ellis and Jeffery Deaver.
What are you working on now?
I am currently going through the final manuscript of Agency with a fine tooth comb before I submit it to my publishers, whilst at the same time fleshing out what is fast evolving into a trilogy of books centred around a detective.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
You can reach me on social media under my username @hismasterwrites where I am active on Instagram, Threats and TikTok.
Alternatively, foreshorepublishing.com/Blame will also take you directly to my debut novel.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Writing can be disheartening at times, especially for new authors. The thought of your manuscript being rejected my publishers is often present in the back of peoples minds. Do not be discouraged. If I can do it, so can you.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
‘There are many paths to the summit.’
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading two books; Woke Up This Morning; the definitive oral history of The Soprano’s and Indiana Jones and the Long Ship of the Gods, the latter having been translated into English from its original German.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I shall be promoting Agency as much as possible after its publication.
In the meantime, I plan on following the threat of my trilogy and seeing where it may take me.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The first thing I would pack would be the graphic novel’s Watchmen by Alan Moore and Maus by Art Spiegelman. On top of them I would place Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl and my favourite book as a child; Georges Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl.
