Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written a few books in the past- I started in 2012 writing my first horror novel Tartarus and then went onto a mystery series called The Adventures of Benedict and Blackwell. My latest novel is The Contract of Maddox Black.
Writing is a bit of an addition- I think a lot of writers say that, but for me it really is a necessity as well. I create worlds that I can escape into. Sometimes the everyday is either too boring or painful- creating a place where you can be or do whatever you want sounds like a pretty good option to escape reality.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called The Contract of Maddox Black. I wrote this whilst travelling Australia and New Zealand. It’s strange to think of needing a place to escape to when you’re in paradise, but that’s what I needed. I needed to escape. I created this cold dismal place with a character who wanted to tear the world apart. She wanted redemption. She was an addictive character to write. I actually would very much have liked to have a drink with her. It was fun creating a grey character that wouldn’t take no for an answer.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I enjoy writing about people I would like to meet. My writing is completely self indulgent so I write the places I want to be. Sometimes the story can twist off track- that is usually caused by a rum every now and again, but that’s just life. Sometimes the main character has to stop along her adventure to get stuck in a bar fight or answer a riddle. That’s the beauty of writing. Sometimes even the writer doesn’t know what’s going to happen. I still don’t.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Kim Harrison influenced me a lot in sense of writing in a genre you love reading. At University I was surrounded by a lot of contemporary styled writers. But I love the self indulgent genre that if Fantasy.
Write what you love.
What are you working on now?
Currently editing the 2nd and 3rd books in the Maddox Black Series. I’m excited!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
The best thing to remember is to have your social media channels updated- your readers want to know what you’re up to! It’s like keeping in touch with a friend- if you stop talking to them, they usually won’t be wanting to know what you’re up to. It’s about consistency and understanding that writing a book is only half of the journey.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just not to take no for an answer. Understand it’s a journey. Your writing style with change as you progress. If you love what you do, you wont care about anything else.
Don’t stop.
Don’t you ever stop.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“You are the author of your own life. Create your own story.”
What are you reading now?
Reading Kelley Armstrong at the moment. I absolutely love her style.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Carrying on with editing the books in this series. I would like to branch off into another storyline, but I don’t think that’s going to happen for a while- I’ve become too obsessed about Maddox Black and her world.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
“How to Survive Anything,” may be a good start.
“Complete Works of Shakespeare,”
“Lord of the Rings.”
“The Crimson Petal and the White.”
