Interview With Author Ella Hall
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born and raised in Portland Oregon. I lived five years of my childhood in Corpus Christi Texas. I am a sibling of five. The middle child. I have three sisters and one brother. My ethnic background consists of Creole, (French and African American) Caucasian, and African American. My mother was half French and half African American. I do not speak French, nor could my mother. My mother raised us all as a single parent in Portland Oregon. She passed in September of this year God rest her soul. I am happily married to Mr. Monasmith, who’s an amazing artist, and soon to be starting his business in the tattoo industry. I am a mother of two and a grandmother of three beautiful granddaughters. I knew I wanted to become a writer when I was in the fifth grade of English, and the entire class read Dead Poets Society’s original script by Tom Schuman. We watched the actual screenplay which featured Robin Williams and was Directed by Peter Weir. We were given the assignment to write our screenplay afterward. It was just so easy for me to allow my thoughts to flow on paper, it came naturally. My screenplay was titled, The black panther and the Windmill. I wish I still had the piece. From that day forward I haven’t stopped writing. I have one full novel finished and two in the works. The second one I’m 12 chapters in. The third one doesn’t have chapters. It’s being written in a unique style.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The title of my book is Text Me Loving Your Enemy. I didn’t have a voice and found myself stuck in a pattern of disbelief in who I was mentally. The abuse continued into my early 30s one day I just had had enough. Which is what led me to write this novel. I was finally able to see my worth and knew I deserved better and that the path I was on was not the one God intended for me. I was tired of wrong relationships, choosing the wrong man, tired of blaming myself for the situations I was in, and tired of wondering if I’d ever find real love.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t have too many unusual writing habits. Unless you count background noise. I like the television on or even relaxing meditational music playing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My book inspirations are Dead Poets Society by Tom Schuman, Scary Stories to Tell In the Dark by Alvin Schwartz, and Stephen King. All of his novels, and the great R. L. Stine.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on two novels. One I don’t want to disclose the details about, but if you love fantasy and thriller then you will love it when it’s completed. As previously stated I’m twelve chapters in. The other novel is just as great. For years I would wake up and immediately write down my dream. I kept a log of them and now I’m turning it into a book. Again it has no chapters and it reminds me of short stories like Goosebumps and R. L. Stine’s creative writing style. I’m pretty stoked about all the novels.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
The best method or website when it comes to promoting my books is https://www.ella-hall.com/
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors would be to keep writing, no matter how long it takes. Writer’s block is a thing just dive back in once you get out of that funk and go full throttle when you do. And never be afraid of critiques, they’re needed.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I have ever heard was from my mother. She told me a talent half-lived is a talent with no life so let it live even when you’re gone.
What are you reading now?
Right now I’m reading a great book by Rhonda Byrne The Secret and Napoleon Hill. Think and grow rich. I love both of their books. Their books are very informative, influential, inspirational, and motivating.
What’s next for you as a writer?
What next for me as a writer? A Successful novel, and more to come. I’m hoping to for a book signing, and a podcast interview.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I was stranded and could only bring three or four books they would be, The Power by Rhonda Byrne, The Stand by Stephen King, Go Ask Alice by Beatrice Sparks, and Needful Things by Stephen King.
