Interview With Author Ella Knight
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a 33 year old neurodivergent author and gamer. It’s no secret I wish Jurassic Park was an actual thing and I’d love to contribute to bringing the dinosaurs back. I thrive on horror-esque stuff. I’m pursuing my MFA in Creative Writing at SNHU and plan to go on to get my PhD. I’ve lived in Northern/Upstate New York my whole life. I began writing when I was really young. My Nanny always told me I should become a writer, but I was convinced I’d be some famous actress or singer. Eventually, when I came to my senses realizing I was never going to be the next Carrie Underwood, I took her advice; and I’m so glad I did. Now, not only am I a writer and author, I’m also an audiobook narrator, still following my acting dream.
I’ve been a writer for many sites including Examiner, The Guardian Liberty Voice, DualShockers, GameRant, ScreenRant, and Esports Illustrated. Counting the couple of personal projects I’ve done for my parents and Nanny, I have seven books out. I’ve dabbled in non-fiction, children’s books, horror, and dark romance while trying to find my voice. And I’ve definitely decided I’m more of a horror writer than any other genre. I’ve even began a series of horror novellas called Knight Whispers. This anthology follows Olivia and all the strange things that happen to her throughout her life. While I lean more towards horror, I do have a children’s series inspired by my son called Adventures Of Kai and I plan to continue that series.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is a novella in my Knight Whispers series titled Santa Claus Is Coming… To Kill. My inspiration for this book comes from my love of Christmas and the magic surrounding it. Drawing on my own trauma, I decided to mix two things that I love, Horror, and Christmas.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn’t necessarily say this is unusual, but I put myself as the character in my stories. I feel what they feel. While I am writing a book, I am no longer really ‘Ella’, I am whoever I’m writing about. I’ve always found it extremely easy to immerse myself into the emotions of others which is a blessing, but also a curse. So there’s a little bit of me in all of my MCs. I also use my trauma to help me write. I personally find it therapeutic and it helps me to tell my story without outwardly telling it. Saying that, it takes me a while to recover from the worlds I build, but coffee helps.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
This may be a bit of a mix but H.D. Carlton and Nora Roberts. There are a lot of dark themes in my books, especially Catching Ivy and Santa Claus Is Coming… To Kill, which were inspired by H.D. Carlton. Her books in particular I’ve drawn inspiration from are Haunting/Hunting Adeline and Shallow River. When it comes to world building and fantasy aspects of books, Nora Roberts has been my inspiration. The two trilogies I often think of are Chronicles of The One and The Dragon Heart Legacy Series.
What are you working on now?
Currently, I’m working simultaneously on a few things. I’m writing the sequel to Catching Ivy called Finding Ivy, and I’m working on another novella for my Knight Whispers series. The novella will of course follow Olivia. She’s struggling with the loss of her best friend while navigating the waters of being newly engaged. But when she loses her fiancé, things get strange, ghostly strange. I am also working on making my books into audiobooks, starting with The Fleshweavers Mask.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I utilize all platforms I’m currently on when promoting my books. My favorite is through my website and YouTube. I create book trailers for my books which I upload to YouTube and then post on my website. While I do use BlueSky and sometimes Facebook to promote my work, I like using Discord the most as I have a small community there who engage in my giveaways and support all of my content.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write. Don’t worry about what others think of your writing. If it’s something you truly love to do, just do it. Don’t get discouraged by denials from publishers. It doesn’t necessarily mean your writing is bad, it just means that particular publisher isn’t a right fit for your work. Which is fine. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to be yourself. Don’t sugar coat your personality or try to conform to societal standards just to gain readers. It’s better to have a community that’s true to your persona than to have false followers.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t follow trends. One of my instructors told us that it’s pointless to follow trends, especially if you want to get your work traditionally published. Trends come and go so fast. By the time you find a publisher who accepts your work, it’ll be another year or three before your book is actually on shelves, meaning there could be a whole new trend out by then. Focus on what you like, what you want, and don’t worry about what others want.
What are you reading now?
Currently I’m finishing up the audiobook Little Liar by Leigh Rivers and I’m re-listening to The Chronicles Of The One by Nora Roberts; which I’m on book 2 – Of Blood And Bones. After I’m done that trilogy, I plan on moving on to The Dragon Heart Legacy series again. My husband doesn’t care much for reading but likes listening to the audiobooks with me so it’s a win/win!
What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to build up my books in my Knight Whispers series. I want to build a bigger community of readers for my work and in 2026, I’m hoping to get recognized for at least one piece of writing, whether that’s through the New York Times or another well known newspaper/magazine. It would be nice to have “Best Selling Author” next to my name, but, we’ll see!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I hate making decisions. Now, there are some technicalities that my mind is automatically jumping to, are we saying 3 or 4 books in total or does a trilogy count as one book? I already know the answer to this but figured it was some sort of loop hole.
Anyways, I would choose H.D. Carlton’s Haunting Adeline and Hunting Adeline, and books one and two of The Dragon Heart Series by Nora Roberts. Though I do feel sequels should count as the same book.
