Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
There are two writers behind the pen name Ella Shine. Cecily Paterson is the author of nine Middle Grade/early YA novels, and Penny Reeve has written over 20 books for children of all ages.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Our first Pet Sitters series includes four books, including ‘Gus Makes A Fuss’ about a grumpy talking cat who makes friends with Lina and Cassie, the pet sitters of Barefoot Springs. THe best friends end up looking after a sometimes invisible guinea pig in ‘Purple Panic’, an oddly flying miniature pony in ‘Tony Takes Off’, and a glitter-sneezing, very allergic pet lizard in ‘Glitter Jitters’.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
We plan the books first, then take turns to write a chapter each. We edit each other’s work as we go, and then do a final read through so that we can hear how the stories sound out loud.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Too many mention, but for this series, we’re highly influenced by every junior fiction writer who’s produced more than 20 books in a single series.
What are you working on now?
More Pet Sitters stories… including one about mice who multiply in a puff of marshmallow-coloured smoke.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
We’re not sure what our best method is yet… but we do like it when young readers love our stories.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Spend time getting good at the writing and storytelling, and don’t rush to publication.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Do the work.”
What are you reading now?
One of us loves thriller fiction, and biographies, which seem an odd combination, but there you go… I’m usually reading one or the other of them.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully more Pet Sitters. We have a lot of ideas for more magical fun.
