Interview With Author Ellie Lerum
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello! I’m a mom of 2 and a Christian author- I’ve published 3 Christian fantasy novels and a short story. There are plans for additional books in the works! My biggest passion in life is to help others know that they’re not alone in wondering ‘where is God’ during their most painful moments. I lost several pregnancies, friendships, and people in my life and was always left with a sense of loneliness. The Jean Cassy series, my first full-length novel and its companions, focuses on just this as I write the story of a young woman who loses her sense of self, children, friends, and more while learning who God is and what He has called her to.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Before I tell this story, it’s important to understand that I have functioning DID (Disassociative Identity Disorder). One of my fragments enjoys telling stories of his own, which is where Turning Point came from. It’s partially his story, and partially the story of a character I had created years ago and never really fleshed out. Turning Point is special in the fact that it was a group effort between alters, my husband, and myself.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I think one of my most unusual writing habits is setting up in the kitchen, beside my espresso machine. It isn’t the strangest thing I’ve done, but as a busy mom who likes to keep an eye on her kids, it’s up there.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve always taken influence from J.R.R. Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, and Jane Austin.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently finishing the editing process of Gracefully Broken, a Christian fantasy set in the same world as my other novels. In this book, readers follow Marin Lott- a promising young healer- as she obeys the confusing and sometimes cryptic calling that HaMelech has placed on her life. It’s been a huge project, especially when I had originally written it as a short story during the period between the first and second service at our church.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Society likes to tear people down, especially when it’s a creative mind who has put themselves out there. Don’t give up, don’t listen to the trolls, and keep your chin up: everything will work out in the end.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
My grandmother would always tell me to keep writing, even when I know that my work confused her. I’m doing just that, as the story cannot be told if no one is willing to tell it.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently working on Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. I love a good historical fiction, especially when there’s drama and intrigue around each corner!
What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing, writing, writing! I’ve got several novels I’m working on while also raising funding for a film project. Turning Point will be turned into a film within the next several years, so it’s a matter of keeping my nose to the grindstone as we publish and polish.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
