Interview With Author Erin Michelson
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My first job in graduate school was writing for business publications. While my career has evolved over the years—from global finance to consulting to technology—writing has always been my first love.
My writing focuses on how to find joy and connection by engaging in the world around us in a personally meaningful way. To date, I’ve written two books and a bonus chapter: “How to be a Digital Nomad: 50 Practical Tips, Interviews, and Personal Insights,” “Adventure Philanthropist: Great Adventure Volunteering Around the World,” and “Adventure Philanthropist: More Fear.”
I also have a new series of four books coming out at the end of May 2024: “How to Pack the Nomad Way: 10 Insider Tips, Must-Have Items, and a Packing Checklist List.” This series features an eBook for city vacations, beach holidays, and camping trips, as well as one combination book for all your packing needs.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I just published “Learn from my 15 Years Traveling the World—How to be a Digital Nomad: 50 Practical Tips, Interviews, and Personal Insights.”
I am inspired to help folks find greater freedom, independence, and abundance in their personal and professional lives. Not only do I want to inspire global travel, but also provide hands-on advice to help folks more easily discover themselves and the wider world.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have a clear sense of when a book is complete. At that point, I understood that my writing could be improved by an editor, but no longer through my own efforts.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Richard Wright’s “Native Sun” influenced me both as a reader and writer. I read it for the first time when I was about 13 and it was so emotional that I began to understand the power of writing as a way to connect with others on a visceral level.
What are you working on now?
New pieces in my Summery® series called “How to Pack the Nomad Way: 10 Insider Tips, Must-Have Items, and a Packing Checklist List—City” for folks heading out on a city vacation, or a beach holiday, or a camping trip.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have an email list of Summery community members that I’ve grown over the years. This direct access to readers is invaluable.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice is not to be afraid to share your work. We grow as creatives when we engage with our readers and learn more about what is important to them.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I received is to center the reader. I strive to understand where folks are in their journeys and ask how I can help them. I then provide practical tips and personal insights to help guide their self-discovery.
What are you reading now?
I’m listening to Meg Wolitzer’s “The Interestings” on audiobook and Ada Limón’s poetry “The Hurting Kind.”
What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to revisit my Adventure Philanthropist book series (published over ten years ago). I’ll be creating more interactive versions with the addition of photos and videos.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The first book would be a notebook to write in, of course. The other books would help spark my imagination and introspection, such as The Dalai Lama’s “The Art of Happiness” and Thich Nhat Hanh’s “The Art of Living.” I would also take an Oxford English dictionary because I love words!
