Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am from Dublin in Ireland, I have always written but have only decided that it is something I’d like to do in a more serious way in the last couple of years. I am going to be married in January 2014 and I have a son who was born in April 2013. I have written 3 Novellas, a book of short stories and the first draft of a novel.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called ‘Michelin’ and the inspiration behind it was to give a character from my book ‘The Case for Skeletons’ a different perspective to what is seen in that book. In ‘The Case for Skeletons’ Michelin is seen through the ideas of an unhinged and unreliable unnamed narrator but in ‘Michelin’ the story is all about him and how he is feeling and how he goes about his days.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really, unless you count writing in the google drive on my phone while commuting.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
There are a lot of Authors I love but the one who always makes me feel like writing is Philip Roth. I’m sure I have been influenced by everything I read but it is hard to see this yourself, it’s only when someone points out something to you that you really see your influences. I’m sure I will see them for myself as time progresses and I get better at this writing lark
What are you working on now?
At the moment I am working on the second draft of a novel called ‘Crowbar Junction.’ I am about two thirds through this and I will start the third draft when this is done and hopefully that will be the last one (but I suspect there will be a fourth draft)
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am not great at the marketing side of things. I am still only learning the business side of being a writer but the sites that offer free listings of your book are very good to get noticed from time to time.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Learn as much as you can about the business and social media side of writing as you can. That is assuming that you have become as good a writer as you think you can be.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t crack your skull on a rainbow.
What are you reading now?
Right now I am reading ‘The Master and Margarita’ by Mikhail Bulgakov. I am only about 100 pages in but it is great so far.
What’s next for you as a writer?
When I finish ‘Crowbar Junction’ I intend to write five-seven more short stories for a collection I have half finished and then I will start on another novel that I have fleshed a story out for called for the time being ‘The End.’
What is your favorite book of all time?
This is a tough question and one that has changed as I have grown older. The book that had the biggest impact on me was ‘Crime and Punishment’ but that is because I was only twenty when I first read it. Actually now that I come to think of it I am not sure that I can put anything above it right now.
