About Eve’s Covering by Elsie McKenney
Inspired by the author’s escape from a cult.
Eve is troubled by the mysterious circumstances surrounding her cousin Alice’s death, but the police won’t take her seriously. When Eve’s family becomes entangled with a religious cult, she struggles with the ideas and leaders who now assume control over her life. But when her rebellion threatens the safety of her family, she gives in and joins the cult’s mission: an orphanage in the Soviet Union. Or, at least that’s the mission on the surface. When Eve discovers the orphanage is a cover for something much more sinister, she sets out to rescue her friends who’ve slowly disappeared, one at a time. The trouble is–she knows too much. If she’s caught, it will be the end of them all.
Eve’s Covering is inspired by the author’s personal experience of life in a cult. Written as fiction, much of Eve’s life is based on her own move to northern Michigan, where her family joined a cult, costing her her friends, family, and everything she held dear. When strange, supernatural things began to happen, she escaped, and ended up homeless in a foreign country before making her way home–only to find it gone. This is her story. This is Eve’s story. A story of escape and of God’s covering of protection: Eve’s Covering

Elsie (Yoder) McKenney was born in Idaho where her family attended a little Mennonite church in the country. It was here she learned to love Jesus – along with Yellowstone, horses, and the smell of sagebrush. When her family moved to northern Michigan, they became entangled in a cult. She rebelled but was finally persuaded to leave her friends, family, and everything she held dear to join. When strange, supernatural things started to happen, she realized her mistake and ran for her life. She was homeless in a foreign country for a time before finding her way back home – only to find it gone. Through these experiences, Elsie was inspired to write Eve’s Covering, her debut novel.
Faith and family are the most important things in her life. She is the mother to two adult children and Mimi to two awesome grandsons. She plans on adding more arrows to her Mimi quiver.
Elsie studied creative writing at Ferris State University where she earned the Excellence in Language and Literature award. She went on to teach literature and composition at an academy while living in Ukraine as a missionary. Elsie is also a world traveler and artist, and has a penchant for all things purple. She does her best writing at four in the morning by firelight. When she isn’t working on a novel, she can be found hiking through the woods, baking marvelous muffins, or reading in a quiet nook. She resides in northern Michigan with her husband and soulmate, David, and their cheeky cavalier spaniel, Mr. Bingley.
