Interview With Author Evette Davis
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Evette Davis. I’ve written five novels. The first was set aside for another time. Three books are part of The Council Trilogy: Book One, THE OTHERS, was released in September. Book 2, THE GIFT, will come out in March 2025, and THE CAMPAIGN, the final installment, will be published in September 2025. I’m also the author of 48 STATES.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
THE OTHERS is inspired by my facination with science fiction, Americal political discourse and my desire to wrote about smart, tough women who can overcome adversity. The Others is about a secrery society of supernatural beings that intervene in politics to try to save humanity.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think so, but who knows these days? I write my novels longhand in notebooks and then type them into the computer later. I edit on my laptop, but I will likely pull out my notebook and a pencil if I need a new chapter or scene.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Charlaine Harris, True Blood Series
People are usually more familiar with the HBO series than the books. Although the books contained hints of sex, they are not nearly as graphic as the TV series. What the books did masterfully is examine the historical prejudices of the South and throw into the mix the existence of vampires and other supernatural creatures against a fundamentalist enemy. It was pure genius and an inspiration for me.
Nora Roberts, The Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy
Beyond being one of the hardest-working writers in the business, Nora Roberts writes great female characters who know their minds. I’ve probably read this series five or six times. I love the incredible storytelling, attention to detail, and undeniable romance and friendship among the characters.
Jessie Mihalik, The Consortium Rebellion
I discovered these books when I was on Libby – my library app – and I fell in love with the sisters in this trilogy. Their grit and determination to control their own destinies makes these books a great read.
Deborah Harkness, All Souls Trilogy
I fell in love with Discovery of Witches, the first book in the trilogy. The characters and storyline were so compelling, the book served as an inspiration for Woman King. Books Two and Three are equally compelling, and do some serious world building. A must read for fans of supernatural adventure/ romance.
Genevieve Jack, The Treasure of Paragon
I love this story series about dragons trapped for hundreds of years in another dimension outside of their kingdom. Each of the siblings finds love and the story of their betrayal by their mother becomes more clear. In the first book, which is set in New Orleans, the love interest is a woman who doesn;t know she’s actually a powerful witch. It’s fun watching her come into her own and discover her powers. I have yet to finish the series, but I’m looking forward to it !
G.A. Aiken, Dragon Kin
What can I say, I have a thing for dragons. These books are full of lusty men and women who fight and f*** in equal measure and along the way learn about love and loyalty. And it’s the women who hold all the power and turn out to be the fiercest warriors – need I say more?
Elizabeth Kostova, The Historian
This book is one of the most unusual and memorable books I ever read. It combines a number of my favorite things: a love of books, book hoarding and Dracula and it takes place in Eastern Europe.
Bram Stoker, Dracula
I’ve read two books probably a half dozen times: Dracula and To Kill a Mockingbird. Both have the same appeal, the battle between good and evil never gets old.
Rebecca Zanetti, Dark Protectors
Vampires, demons, shapeshifters and witches living in the same world governed by treaties and occasionally going to war? Sounds like my kind of world. And if you mix in romance, you have a recipe for a compelling series. Like the Treasures of Paragon, I haven’t gotten through all of the books, but I will eventually.
Ursula Le Guin, Earthsea Cycle
Ms. Le Guin is obviously one of the most important science fiction writers ever to grace the genre. The Earthsea Cycle is a beautiful meditation on power, good versus evil, the egos of men and the fragile balance of darkness and light. Her work has been a huge influence on my thinking.
What are you working on now?
I just finished Book 3 in my series, so I am taking a breather, but I have choices when I decide to start writing again, which are to begin a romance series or a spin-off of The Council Trilogy characters for a new urban fantasy series about a vampire detective who locates missing magical objects.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My website, www.evettedavis.com, has all of the links to my social. Instagram has been very effective.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice is to keep working. Writing is damn hard work, and the only way to do it is to sit down and write. Also – everyone, and I do mean everyone, needs an editor.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
See above.
What are you reading now?
Edge of the Known World, Sheri T. Joseph
Creation Lake, Rachel Kushner
The Familiar, Leigh Bardugo.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Depending on which series I decide to start – and I may do both to keep things interesting – I need to start doing my research. In the meantime, I intend to read interesting books by other writers and study Spanish.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A Discovery of Witches, The Historian, Dracula and a dictionary.
