Harmon Camburn signed up for duty as a Union soldier two weeks after the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter. For the next three years, he experienced war from the battlefields. He was present at both Battles of Bull Run and other skirmishes of the War Between the States, including the Battle of Fredericksburg. His tour of duty ended with a shot through his lung at the Siege of Knoxville where he was captured by Confederate soldiers and held as a prisoner of war for six days. It shows the horror of the battlefield to the joys of the sun breaking through the clouds after days of rain. The descriptions of the landscape are beautifully crafted, just as the descriptions of scattered bodies on the battlefield are ghastly reminders of the cost of war.
