About Forms of Defiance
“Forms of Defiance” is a collection of hyper-short stories representing clashes of a deeply Southern sensibility against traditional story form/structure. The Southern voice is an emotional one that explores the knotty nature — difficult, nonlinear and messy — of love, loss, confusion and choice. Much of the time, individuals reveal their experiences, feelings and even options according to their own peculiar way of talking to themselves be it through selections from a Bible concordance, playlists, books they read or other ways. Sometimes even, their telling is within their own judgmental self-talk.
The first intention underlying these stories is recognizability: emotional accessibility in plot and concept. Yet these characters are sharing their lives by telling their stories in genre-bending ways – and occasionally even hybridization – delivering vibrant and sometimes sly, considerations of what matters most to them: love and loss and moral choice, ultimately searching for the meaning of their existence.
