Interview With Author Frank Hasler
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
rank Hasler was born in Berlin-Tempelhof and raised in Hannover, Germany. His writing is deeply rooted in the gritty, realistic perspective of a man who has spent over a decade working the “front lines” of human experience.
As a psychological counselor and systemic coach, Hasler navigated the fracture points of society—working in youth welfare, crisis intervention, and with refugees and trauma survivors. These “shadow zones” of reality serve as the foundation for his literary voice.
In his work, Hasler doesn’t go looking for heroes; he looks for the truth. He writes about what remains when the system fails, capturing the quiet, simmering defiance of those who keep moving forward against the odds.
With The Asphalt Chronicles (Die Asphalt-Chroniken), he opens the first chapter of his Noir universe: a collection of stories exploring guilt, control, and the grueling effort to remain human in the dark.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“My latest book is a short story called Ice Flower. I was inspired by the tragic case of a girl in the German youth welfare system and her confrontation with the police.”
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
“My latest book, Ice Flower, is a short story serving as an interlude to my upcoming novel, Diary of a Shadow Warrior, which arrives this June. It was inspired by the tragic case of a girl in the German youth welfare system and her confrontation with the police.”
What authors, or books have influenced you?
“When I write, I simply let it flow. Stephen King once said that he sees himself as an archaeologist at a dig site, carefully uncovering a find piece by piece. I identify with this deeply; my latest short story, Ice Flower, revealed itself to me in much the same way.
What are you working on now?
“Currently, I’m working on several different projects at once. It might seem contradictory, especially with my new novel Diary of a Shadow Warrior coming out this June, but I have so many ideas inside me that I simply have to get them down on paper.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
“Personally, I identify strongly with Banksy. It’s not actually that important to me how many people notice my books; what matters most is being satisfied with my own work. That’s why I primarily use reviews from experienced beta readers as a means of promotion and reflection. However, I still view social media as an indispensable tool in today’s world.”
Do you have any advice for new authors?
“I recommend that every author remains true to themselves. I believe that art exists to give a voice to those who have none. To me, art means resistance. Therefore, my best advice is: do not write to be seen—write to be heard.”
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I ever received was: Never forget where you come from and who you are.
What are you reading now?
“I am currently reading Unveiled by Esther Ahmad.
What’s next for you as a writer?
“I choose to stay in the flow
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
“If I were stranded on a desert island, I’d take three books with me: The Bible, The Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy, and The Boy Who Granted Dreams
