Interview With Author Frek Indigo
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Frek Indigo is the author of two absurd and satirical books that explore the ridiculousness of modern life. His writing blends dark humor, surrealism, and social commentary, creating stories that are both bizarre and strangely truthful. He writes to expose nonsense — and to laugh at it.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called Think Slowly, Stay Broke.
It was inspired by a strange dream in which the world was entirely run by self-proclaimed life coaches. Everyone was rich in mindset, but broke in reality. I woke up laughing — and slightly terrified. That feeling became the core of the book: a satire of a world that mistakes confidence for competence and quotes for wisdom.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Absolutely. I only write while upside down, suspended by my ankles, listening to whale sounds remixed with dial-up modem noises. My pen name was actually whispered to me by a microwave. I also refuse to write unless a rubber duck is staring at me from across the room. It’s not superstition. It’s protocol.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
None, probably. I once tried reading a book, but the book stared back. Since then, I prefer to write in a vacuum — metaphorically and sometimes literally. If anything influenced me, it was a mislabeled IKEA manual and a forgotten fortune cookie that simply said: “Why not?”
What are you working on now?
I’m currently writing my autobiography, which is entirely fictional, and a novel, which is suspiciously accurate. The autobiography is called “I Wasn’t There, But I Remember Everything”, while the novel is based on my real life, though I deny it under oath. Both projects involve time travel, unreliable narrators, and an emotional support blender.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still figuring it out. Right now, I’m trying everything: whispering to strangers in libraries, leaving QR codes in public restrooms, and occasionally just screaming the title of my book into the void. So far, the void hasn’t bought a copy—but I remain hopeful.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t wait for the perfect idea or the perfect time—start writing now. Be consistent, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to sound ridiculous at first. Writing improves with doing, not just thinking.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Never trust a duck in a business suit.”
I still don’t know what it means, but somehow, it saved my life. Twice.
What are you reading now?
At the moment, I’m reading a user manual for a microwave written in iambic pentameter.
It’s confusing, poetic, and oddly inspirational.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to write a trilogy entirely from the perspective of a tax-evading pineapple who dreams of becoming a motivational speaker.
It’s ambitious, fruity, and emotionally taxing — just like me.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
“How to Escape a Desert Island for Dummies” — ironically, it’s blank.
“The Existential Scream” — 800 pages of one long scream transcribed in different fonts.
“Cookbook for Imaginary Ingredients” — very useful if you’re planning to eat your sanity.
And probably “My Last Book” — just to remember who I was before I started talking to coconuts.
