Interview With Author Freya Pickard
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m Freya Pickard, author of The Kaerling series which is currently 15 volumes long. I have, this year, started producing boxsets of The Kaerling, for readers who prefer longer books!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest novel is Air Brother. It’s book 5 of the The Kaerling boxsets and contains volumes 13-15. I was inspired to write The Kaerling series when I discovered that many modern fantasy books were being written to a predictable formula. In The Kaerling I have tried something different. Air Brother takes the four companions into the dangerous and hostile land of Jargoiden.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write for 6 days and then take 4 days off writing in order to re-charge and do ordinary domestic things such as shopping, baking, gardening and cleaning. I find this increases my creativity.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
JRR Tolkien opened my eyes to new worlds. Tad Williams showed me how to write a complex novel that actually tells the reader the truth, without them being aware of it. And Anne McCaffrey gave me insight into telepathy and how awesome dragons can be!
What are you working on now?
I am currently writing the first draft of volume 19 of The Kaerling series.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My blog works really well as does Twitter.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never give up. Always believe in what you are writing. Always write what YOU want to write, not what people tell you to write.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You’ll never make any money out of writing fantasy novels, but you will enjoy the process.
What are you reading now?
I’m not reading anything at the moment as I never read whilst producing a first draft. The next book lined up on my Kindle, however, is Bleeding Heart by Aspasia Bissas.
What’s next for you as a writer?
To reach the end of The Kaerling series and start publishing poetry again.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Lord of The Rings by JRR Tolkien
Shadowmarch by Tad Williams
Myths of the Mirror by D Wallace Peach
Haliden’s Fire by Chris Sendrowski
