Interview With Author Geoffrey Waugh
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
The Rev Dr Geoff Waugh is the founding editor of the Renewal Journal and author of over
20 Renewal Journals and over 20 books on ministry and mission (www.renewaljournal.com).
Geoff taught Anglican, Catholic, and Uniting Church students in Trinity Theological College and the School of Theology of Griffith University as well as at Christian Heritage College in Brisbane, Australia. He taught in schools and Bible Colleges in Papua New Guinea and in the South Pacific and led short-term missions in Africa, Europe, Asia and in the South Pacific islands.
Geoff and Meg have been blessed with three adult children, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren (so far). They have celebrated Christmas with five generations including parents and grandparents, proclaiming the Christmas Message: “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.”
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Life of Jesus, also published as The Amazing Life of Jesus, is my latest book. It’s a brief biography of the most amazing person in history. We date our calendars and diaries from the time of his birth. His story is in the world’s most famous best seller book now published in over 700 languages, with over 3,000 other sectional translations in different languages. So I wanted to write a brief chronological biography of his amazing life. Why would someone so popular, kind, helpful and loving be savagely tortured and publicly executed? The masses of people wanted him to be their king, but the religious and political authorities killed him. Why?
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have edited 20 individual Renewal Journals and 4 books of compiled journals. I originally published with commercial publishers, and independent publishing with Amazon and Kindle. Now I make my books freely available as eBooks on my Renewal Journal website: renewaljournal.com with links to commercial publishers.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The world’s bestseller, translated into over 700 languages and parts of it translated into over 3,000 languages, still inspires me, especially in different versions – the Bible. Historical novels often grab me, especially books by Morris West, Lloyd Douglas, and C S Lewis.
What are you working on now?
Now I am republishing my book The Life of Jesus as The Amazing Life of Jesus, with improvements in the text. It’s a fascinating brief biography of the most famous person in history.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My core website is www.renewaljournal.com, with links to hundreds of articles and books.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start with topics that inspire and influence you. Keep ideas and drafts on file. Some of my best books have come from reviving or building on prior writing.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Love God and love others. All great leaders and influential writers and others value and promote loving, caring and helping relationships.
What are you reading now?
I often return to C S Lewis, always brilliant and prolific. His novels The Chronicles of Narnia, now being filmed again, remain entertaining reading, and so I have produced seven books, also compiled into one volume, titled Discovering Aslan, devotional reflections on these stories.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have completed my memoirs, and hope to continue with more books on mission and revival.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, Mere Christianity by C S Lewis, A History of Christianity (Volumes I & II) by K S Latourette.
