Interview With Author Geronimo (N/A)
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a consultant by trade and write under the pen name Geronimo.
I’ve spent the entirety of my approximately 12.5-year career working in Japan. The industry I work in is IT.
I’m an English/Japanese bilingual and as such, have been assigned to and delivered many global engagements that involve stakeholders both within and outside Japan.
I began self-publishing Kindle books in 2022 and have so far written 3 books in both English and Japanese. I’ve covered topics such as language learning, study techniques, and working in Japan.
My pen name comes from a character in the Japanese manga series Kinnikuman. In Kinnikuman, Geronimo is a human who aspires to become a Chojin (superhuman)… As for why I relate to him, I’ll leave that to your imagination.
I seek to make connections with fellow writers, global workers, language learners, and others who share my interests. If you feel that we might have something to learn from each other, please reach out to me!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “7 Things You Need to Know About Working With Japanese Organizations.”
Foreigners often struggle in projects and initiatives that are driven by or otherwise heavily involve Japanese organizations. I used to be asked all the time by my colleagues what it is about Japanese organizations that makes their practices and customs so different from what they’re used to.
In this book I’ve fleshed out my thoughts on the subject. I’ve consolidated the challenges into 7 key things based on by own experiences as well as insights from colleagues and clients.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not so much unusual but in terms of routines and methods, I start out my day with Morning Pages (as advocated by Julia Cameron). I also follow the Pomodoro technique when writing (25-minute sprints with 5-minute breaks).
What authors, or books have influenced you?
For non-fiction (I haven’t been reading much fiction lately), I like authors who write on topics that have a clear benefit to the reader and employ a straightforward writing style. Some authors that come to mind are Tim Ferriss, Ramit Sethi, Seth Godin, and Kevin Kelly.
In terms of Japanese authors, I’ve enjoyed books by such authors as Mayu Yamaguchi (legal scholar) and Hiroyuki (internet entrepreneur).
What are you working on now?
At the moment there isn’t another book that I’m working on. I’m currently trying to pave a path to self-employment and that’s been my main focus.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Up until now I’ve mostly been active on the Japanese Kindle store so I don’t have an established method or preferred website. I’m trying out many book launch promotion services to promote the book I just recently published.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I recommend setting expectations for yourself and not for your book. That is, try to enjoy the process and not look to external sources for validation.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To recognize that people fundamentally don’t care.
Imposter Syndrome can cripple you and make you fearful of taking the first step but that comes from an illusion that the world is going to notice you. Once you recognize that you aren’t going to draw any undue attention, you’re liberated to put out what you will into the world.
What are you reading now?
The Practice by Seth Godin and The Inevitable by Kevin Kelly.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I don’t have a clear idea yet but I always enjoy books whose mission is to debunk conventional or received wisdom. I’d like to write something with that kind of thrust.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan
Dune by Frank Herbert
Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths by Shigeru Mizuki
