Interview With Author Greg H
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a web developer, college instructor, and writer based in Nashville, Tennessee. I’ve written two books, Jump and Dorcheat. Both were published on Amazon’s KDP.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Dorcheat. It’s a story I’ve been carrying in my head since 2005, when I saw helicopter footage on the news of small groups of people walking along I-10 out of New Orleans in the devastation after Hurricane Katrina. That image stayed with me all this time— I kept wondering what it must have felt like to leave the city on foot like that, and where you would go if you had nowhere to return to. I finally wrote the story down after all these years. I’m from the part of Louisiana where Dorcheat is primarily set, so I rooted the story there. Dorcheat is a real bayou, and it became the emotional and geographic backbone of the novel.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think so. I write early in the morning so as to not interfere with my work day (I’m self employed). I have found that I need to have the basic structure of the book figured out before I begin. For Dorcheat, I used my version of the 8 Sequence Structure, which I learned about online. It’s primarily a screenwriting technique. I wrote a couple of screenplays long before I tried writing books, so that approach works for me.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Authors: Stephen King, Kurt Vonnegut, Jerzy Kosiński
Books: No Country for Old Men, Confederacy of Dunces, The Stand
What are you working on now?
A prequel/sequel of Dorcheat.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I don’t really have one. Trying to figure out that part of the whole game.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I’m probably not the best to give any advice on writing, but I’d suggest study and learn everything you can about Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t quit your day job.
What are you reading now?
Confederacy of Dunces for the third or fourth time.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ll probably just keep writing, like I’ve done since I was a kid. Apparently I’m going to write no matter what.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the Bible, Confederacy of Dunces, Magic Circles: The Beatles in Dream and History, Slaughterhouse Five.
