About How to Hotwire an Airplane
From the bestselling author of Submerged: Life on a Fast Attack Submarine in the Last Days of the Cold War
In the spring of 2001, Hiram Bleeker, a lonely, guilt-wracked Vietnam veteran with severe PTSD, is holding a gun to his mouth. As he is about to pull the trigger, an enchanting woman who does not seem to be of this world introduces him to something that restores his soul—rescuing immigrants in the desert and flying them over the internal checkpoints of the US Border Patrol in southwest Texas. As he flies immigrants in his small plane and saves them from the killing dehydration and heat of the Texas desert, the darkness in his heart begins to fade. But when America is attacked on September 11, it succumbs to fear and hysteria. What was once a simple act of human kindness is now a serious crime against the state, potentially a capital offense. Hiram must woo the love of his life and elude the clutches of the Border Patrol while flying over the desolate and hostile plains of Texas. In this book, you will learn about the healing power of love, redemption through sacrifice, and how to hot-wire an airplane.
Reader reviews:
“Jump into the cockpit of a shaky Cessna 172 and strap in for a gritty, white-knuckle flight with Hiram Bleeker, a Vietnam War veteran pilot, as he navigates treacherous West Texas landscapes and moral predicaments. For years, Hiram has sought to bury his wartime past by flying dog rescue missions in which he encounters shady clients in the most isolated, desert locations in places not big enough to call a town. However, an unexpected encounter pushes him into the dangerous world of smuggling immigrants across the Texas border into the United States and evading high-tech Border Patrol agents. A romantic interlude with a mysterious woman complicates Hiram’s life, as she always seems to be two steps ahead of him.”
“In How to Hot Wire an Airplane, retired Navy submarine Commander and experienced pilot, Henry Rausch has written an aviation political thriller that is not only fast paced, but edgy and believable.”
“The Kind of Book We Need Right Now: Rausch– through poignant, and directed prose, as well as an obvious wealth of knowledge and experience, created a “How to” of many forms with this book. Not only “How to Hotwire an Airplane” but, how to restore empathy within man.”

Author Bio:
I went to Stanford because I had my heart set on being a doctor, but while there I found I wasn't interested in that career at all, when I found out what doctors actually do for a living! I became a submarine officer and conducted classified missions against the Soviet Union of great importance to the United States. I wrote a memoir about my experiences, Submerged, which was well received and stayed on the Amazon Bestseller list for 3 months. After leaving the Navy, I bought an airplane and worked in the satellite industry, and used the plane to fly to worksites and, honestly, just to have fun, flying around the US. My latest book is loosely based on my exploits in a small plane.
