Interview With Author I.O. Scheffer
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi, so my name is a pen-name. I have three books published in my series Fearghus Academy, and the remainder of the series outlined with one draft for the fourth installment close to ready for publication and the fifth installment in the works. I’ve also published an art notebook. As for other works, on my author website (MakingDomhan through Wix), I have some short stories published in different genres including thriller/horror, as well as poetry. There’re some other novels in the works, both fantasy and sci-fi/dystopian, but they’re nowhere near ready for publication.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Fearghus Academy: Precarious Gems” which is the third novel in my YA fantasy series. A huge chunk of it is a tournament arch, which was broadly inspired by different anime and books I’ve read that feature fantasy action with competing schools and/or students. It’s also a significant personal arch for the FMC (Artesia Addison) which I had been leading up to and hinting at since the first book (“Fearghus Academy: October Jewels”) — it was a lot of fun to write!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have to phrase things oddly, which is also true for me in real life when I’m talking and thinking. It’s like my brain comes up with answer B before answer A. This works well in some ways as it helps make my voice unique as a writer, but I don’t usually want my characters to sound like I do, so it’s something I have to look out for while revising.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The Bloody Jack series by L.A. Meyer was a big influence on me when I was younger, and I loved the first two books in the Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children. I was and am still a fan of animated series like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Soul Eater, and Another (which is also a novel I recommend).
What are you working on now?
The fourth and fifth books in Fearghus Academy. I post pretty sporadically on Instagram.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve had luck with Facebook for advertisements, but l prefer Instagram as a format and for messaging.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t strive for perfection — write first.
Draw inspiration from the people and environment around you.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I’m not sure, but probably edit your writing before submitting it.
What are you reading now?
Legal documents. I’m going through some stuff right now.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing the remaining four novels in Fearghus Academy and completing my trand-alone sci-fi/dystopian novel.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
It depends on how long I’m stranded, but I imagine survival guides on how to survive stranded on a desert island.
