About I’m Not Britney Spears
Should a nobody really be writing a memoir? This is a question I actually wrestled with before reasoning it through and accepting that it’s kind of a stupid thing to ask oneself. To suppose that there is a class of nobodies one must believe that there is a group of people that exists above the masses defined by wealth, fame and success. Their existence, their importance, makes us who we are. We are put in our place by their glowing presence. They are a class above.
There are indeed people who are held up in our consumer society as being something the rest of us should aspire to be. They are the somebodies; the actors and musicians, the footballers, the breakfast television presenters, the influencers, prominent politicians, the commentators and culture warriors, boxers and formula one drivers. They represent only a tiny fraction of humanity (maybe not the best fraction). But are they a class in any meaningful sense?
Now, I don’t begrudge a talented person any of their success. I’m not one to be raining on parades or living in a state of jealousy. Ultimately though I do object to the idea of a human being as a ‘nobody’. Everyone is a somebody. I’m convinced of this. I’ve been around for more than 40 years on this planet and I’ve never met a nobody. They simply don’t exist.
I’m not Britney Spears but this is no obstacle in my mind. She has her story and I have mine.
I should warn the reader in advance that some of the material herein will not be suitable for younger readers and will of course not be to everyone’s taste. The only promise I make is that I will be honest in everything I say in this book. My memory may not be what it once was but I will endeavour to do my best and give you the truth. Anything less would be a shame.
With that in mind I invite you to jump in. Hope you enjoy the ride.
