Interview With Author Isabella Wu
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in Rochester, New York. I was a quiet kid in school with a wild imagination. In middle school, I wrote my first novel spanning over 100 pages about a dragon rider during study hall. Now, I live in Houston, Texas where I enjoy the diverse culinary scene. In 2023, I graduated from Houston Christian University with a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing and I also started my own editing small business the first day of that year. I’ve always been a big church-goer and strong believer in Christ.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first and latest book is “Dappled Leaves & Dust,” a poetry chapbook with 18 poems inspired by the practice of writing, nature and relationships.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
First and foremost, the Bible is the most influential book in my life. I really like Paul’s fiery letters. He has such a passion for Christ and writes clearly and powerfully. The book of Ephesians also is a divine read (literally!). There are really too many good fantasy books that have influenced me, but if I had to mention a few authors and books, I’d say Laini Taylor, Maggie Stiefvater, “Mistwood” by Leah Cypess and Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows series.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a series called The Wordsmith, which is a fantasy adventure about a teller of tales and writer of epic poems who is exiled from his home country and is searching for a place to belong. I’m not sure I’ll ever publish it, but it’s good practice to write several novels before publishing one!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write, make it good and don’t give up. Seek feedback from people who are more skilled than you at writing and don’t take feedback personally. Always seek to improve. Read books on the craft of writing, the classics and the bestsellers in the genre you are writing in.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Allow the first draft to be messy because no one will ever have to see it.
What are you reading now?
It’s December 2025 as I write this, and I’m reading the Books of Babel. It’s an excellent series that really grabs your attention with wonderful world-building. I recommend if it you like fantasy and adventure tales!
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m hoping to write more novels and finally publish one! I’ll also be submitting more poems to literary magazines.
