Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
First and foremost, JDeVereS is a writer, whether generating ‘white papers’, ‘point papers’, technical manuals, poetry, a wide genre of magazine articles or “The Elfkin Journals: the first book in a planned series of novels surrounding the Elven influence on our planet.
Aside from writing he travels internationally and has seen life from many different perspectives. These world-wide experiences strongly influence his writing style and subject matter!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first full-length novel is entitled “The Elfkin Journals: Blending of the Races”. This is the first book in an intended trilogy with many spin-offs intended for the future. JDeVereS has little tolerance for rigid thinking… life is all about learning and growing. Adapting to new concepts and scientific break through ideas that improve and alter our life perspectives. “The Elfkin Journals” is an attempt – to entertain while taking a closer look at outdated concepts and ideologies. Rigid thinkers never grow!
His primary doctrine is simply: “The only lasting treasures are those you can hold in your heart – not in your hands!”
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When writing science fiction or fantasy… I wait for my characters to talk to me… I create a scene and wait until my characters tell me how they would handle the situation. Typically, this occurs in the middle of the night…
At that point I jump out of bed.. make a few notes… then wait until daylight before “fleshing out” the concept.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Lord! Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, Keats, Byron, Ursula K. Le Guin, Alice Mary North (aka Andre Norton), Bradbury, Tolkien, Asimov, Jules Verne… heck… the list is endless. I appreciate writers who speak to prime human motivations in an entertaining fashion. I am a strong believer that 97% of good fiction is “non-fiction”… it is the task of the fiction author to take real human emotions, as we experience them in everyday life, and set them in an unusual environment that allows them to tell a unique tale while still talking to real human feeling, emotions and responses to life’s challenges
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on Book 2 of “The Elfkin Journals”.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I follow the advise of professional promoters such as “The Awesome Gang”!
My personal website: http://www.theelfkinjournals.com – is a blog that allows me to communicate with people interested in my thoughts… it also allows me to share my art and related peotry/quotes which are the cornerstone of my stories.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
This is becoming an “Indie” world… embrace it… the biggest shock to me as a long time writer was the transition from writing magazine articles, where the publisher handles everything except the writing, to a world where “the artist” inside me must also become a business person. Like it or not – this is rapidly become the “norm” in the world of publishing.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“To thine owe self be true and it must follow, as the night – the day, you can the be false to no others!” Sorry, I paraphrased that a little…
What are you reading now?
Aiiiya! “The Elfkin Journals” again and again and again until I get it right!
What’s next for you as a writer?
As I travel the world, I write magazine articles about the places I’ve been and my experiences. However, my literay journal at this point is “The Elfkin Journals!”
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Ahhhh! Like the dilemma in “The Time Machine”?
I would have to think about this a long time!
