Interview With Author J. E. Spears
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m the author of The House of the Damned series, a dark romance psychological thriller saga drenched in sin, secrets, and betrayal. I’ve written two full-length novels—Sin & Deceit and Fractured & Broken (currently in progress)—with a third, even darker and more epic, on the horizon. My writing lives at the intersection of psychological warfare and twisted love, where desire and danger walk hand-in-hand.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Fractured & Broken, the second in The House of the Damned series. It was inspired by the idea of what happens after the fall—how people survive the wreckage of lies, power games, and fractured identities. It dives deep into trauma, redemption, and the haunting pull of forbidden love.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write best at night, when the world is quiet and the shadows feel alive. I listen to moody, cinematic soundtracks or dark ambient noise—no lyrics, just emotion. Sometimes, I’ll dress like one of my characters to get into their mindset. Strange? Maybe. Effective? Absolutely.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Gillian Flynn for her sharp, unapologetic darkness. Sylvia Day for her raw sensuality. Anne Rice for the gothic undertones. And Stieg Larsson for weaving politics and danger so masterfully into story. I’m drawn to books that aren’t afraid to show the ugly, the intimate, the dangerous.
What are you working on now?
Book Two: Fractured & Broken. It’s bloodier, sexier, and more psychologically intense than Book One. I’m also outlining a new trilogy—an epic, politically charged dark romance with global stakes, high treason, and a love story that could start a war.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Instagram and TikTok for the aesthetic and emotional hooks. But I’ve found the most meaningful connections through reader newsletters and dark romance Facebook groups. Having a well-branded website and staying consistent on BookTok are absolute game-changers.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write the book you need to write, not the one you think will sell. Don’t flinch. Go into the dark places—emotionally, psychologically—and bleed there. That’s where the real story is. And revise ruthlessly.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Write hard and clear about what hurts.” — Hemingway. Pain is powerful. If you channel it into your work, readers will feel it.
What are you reading now?
The Mindfck Series* by S.T. Abby—fast-paced, twisted, and emotionally raw. Perfect inspiration fuel.
What’s next for you as a writer?
After Fractured & Broken, I’m diving headfirst into a dark romance political thriller trilogy. Think secret societies, brutal betrayals, and a heroine who burns empires to the ground for love and revenge.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
The Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
The Art of War by Sun Tzu — because even on an island, strategy matters.
