Interview With Author J.R. Allison
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a retired lobsterman from Downeast Maine. I’ve written a short-fiction anthology and a tragi-comic fictional memoir due to be published in 2026
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Rock Bottom & Rising Tide – Maine Island Stories. Every story in this collection was inspired by my life on the islands and waters of Downeast Maine.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do my best thinking when insomnia strikes and I’m awake at 2:00am. This happens fairly often.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Barbara Kingsolver, John Irving, Joyce Carol Oates, Arthur Golden, Harper Lee, Jenny Lawson, Douglas Adams.
What are you working on now?
My first novel: A Moxie and a Whoopie Pie — Due for release in 2026.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
None.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I am a new author.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t sweat the petty things. Also, don’t pet the sweaty things.
What are you reading now?
The menu in a Chinese restaurant. Gonna get me some of that moo goo gai pan.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Nothing. I’ve told my stories. I’m tired, and I’m done
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Been there, done that: Dictionary, Atlas, World Almanac and Book of Facts.
