What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
‘Book of Codes’ is my latest publication for 10 year olds. This fictional story is an action/adventure of two twins, who break a secret Caesarian code to discover a hidden underground city. I began writing the rough draft of this story several years ago as I was researching codes used by the Romans.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I never write even one word until I have completely visualized the entire story, characters, and setting. At that point I begin composing the opening chapter entirely in my head. I will then play it back in my mind like a movie. If it makes sense to me, I begin transferring the story to the computer and will write relentlessly every day until it is finished. Once done, I walks away from the manuscript for at least a week and then return back to the manuscript for editing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I met Wilson Rawls in the seventies and saw his handwritten manuscript (Where the Red Fern Grows). We discussed what it took to write a book of such magnitude. It was at this point in time that I knew I would write children’s books in my lifetime.
What are you working on now?
Shona Anderson (co-author) and I are writing the fourth book in the Cow Pie Gang series.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have learned that authors must not rely on just one site to promote their books. This includes sites such as Awesomegang, social media sites, and much more.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
1. Don’t be afraid – just write!
2. Put the time in!
3. Learn everything you can about marketing and publishing! Do not expect others to do it for you.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t be afraid – just write!
What are you reading now?
Nothing. When I am writing a new book, I do not allow any distractions to interfere with my concentration.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I will begin writing the Book of Codes part 2 this fall.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Bible, Where the Red Fern Grows, Biography of Lincoln, and a copy of the United States of America Constitution
