Interview With Author Jace Marsh
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m Jace Marsh. Author, caffeine enthusiast, and chronic creator of characters who make questionable life decisions. I’ve written two books so far… Ravenfall which is a second-chance romance full of heartbreak, healing, and more tension than two people pretending they’re “just friends” … and A Veil of Shadows and Thorns, a dark fantasy with gothic vibes, where ancient magic and underworld royalty collide.
I write stories that swing between swoony and spooky, because why choose one when you can emotionally devastate readers in multiple genres?
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is A Veil of Shadows and Thorns, the first in what is currently a four-book series… though that number changes every time one of my characters get dramatic, so no promises.
It’s heavily inspired by the myth of Hades and Persephone. I’ve had a lifelong love addiction to Greek mythology, the kind where you say ‘just one more myth’ and suddenly it’s 3 a.m.
That blend of darkness, power, and forbidden connection was the spark that lit the series. Once the characters walked onto the page, they refused to leave until I told their story.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do! For starters, I have to write in absolute silence. I wish I were one of those authors who can write to soundtracks and the radio, but the second music starts playing, I’m singing, not writing. Trust me no one wants to hear me sing.
Other than that, my brain operates like a chaotic wall of sticky notes. I have ideas everywhere in notebooks, on my phone… somehow they all come together into a world of its own. Well eventually…..
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have been influenced by quite a few authors through the years, but several do stand out to me. Laura Thalassa’s Bargainer series was a major inspiration. The atmosphere, the romance, and the magic all helped shape the kind of stories I love to create.
Jen Calonita also left a huge mark on me. Her fairytale worlds were unforgettable and showed me how enchanting and heartfelt fantasy can be, even when its without romance. And I will admit that growing up reading J. K. Rowling played a part in my love for fantasy as well. I am not a fan of her personally, but the magic of those early stories still influenced me.
On a more personal level, D. M. Sinclair (Author of 100 Billion Ghosts Gone) has been one of my greatest influences. He is a talented author and also a close friend whose support has meant the world to me. His stories and his belief in mine encouraged me to write more boldly and trust my own voice.
What are you working on now?
Right now I am working on the second book in the Duskborne Cycle, which is called Labyrinth of Dusk and Fire. I am also juggling a few other ideas that are still in the brainstorming phase, so those are very much in the ‘mad scientist’ stage of development. Eventually I do plan to write a sequel to Ravenfall, but nothing is officially planned yet.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
For promoting my books, I rely on a mix of social media and my own website. I have a Facebook page and an Instagram where I share updates, series art, and connect with readers. I also maintain my website, www.jacemarsh.com, which serves as a hub for all my work.
As for sales, the Duskborne Cycle is available on both Amazon and Barnes & Noble, making it easy for readers to find and purchase the books wherever they prefer!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors is simply just write. Get your ideas out, even if they feel messy or imperfect. You can always go back and clean things up later, but keeping the story trapped in your head won’t do you or the story any good. Writing is how your ideas come to life, and the first step is simply putting them on the page.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Someone once told me to write like nobody is watching. I’ve taken that to heart. It reminds me that the first draft doesn’t have to be perfect, and that sometimes the most honest stories come from just letting yourself go.
What are you reading now?
Believe it or not, I’m currently reading the Crescent City series by Sarah J. Maas. I finally gave in after finishing ACOTAR, mostly because it had been glaring at me from my TBR pile for months like it was offended I hadn’t picked it up yet.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Next for me as a writer is getting my book out there as much as possible and connecting with readers who will love these stories. I’m also focused on continuing the Duskborne Cycle. The characters are really close to my heart, so I feel a strong need to see where their journeys take them and to share every twist, challenge, and revelation along the way.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
My first pick would hands down be Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. It has been a favorite of mine since I was young, and I could read it over and over. My second choice would probably be The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams because, let’s be honest, some humor is essential when you’re stuck on a desert island. And my third pick would be Dark Olympus by Katee Robert — I love the mix of mythology, romance, and intrigue, and it’s the kind of book I could get lost in for hours.
