Interview With Author Jack Adkins
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a System Analyst in a 100 bed hospital in Kentucky. The rest of my time is split between writing and playing Dungeons and Dragons with anyone who will sit still for a couple of hours (usually my four boys). I’ve published two novels in my Dragons of Dorwine series, with a third in the works. I also have to short stories you can get for free on my website.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Eye of a Dragon was inspired by the first book in the series ๐ This is a more personal story for me. Anuka, my main character, is getting desperate in his search for his father and takes some pretty extreme measures to try to find him.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write anywhere and everywhere. I have a special keyboard for my phone, I write on my iPad, an old Lenovo laptop, my desktop computer, or in an e-mail to myself while on lunch.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
R.A. Salvatore really caught me. As a boy who lost his father at a young age, the idea of a master swordsman teaching his son to follow in his footsteps captivated me. Recently, Brandon Sanderson’s tales (particularly the Stormlight Archive) have held my fleeting attention.
What are you working on now?
The third book in my Dragons of Dorwine series, a series for Kindle Vella, and an Arthurian Romantic Fantasy novel.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
TikTok has blown me away at how well it’s done. When I post consistently, my sales climb. When I’m a slacker, they taper off.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing. No matter what season you are in. You might be terrified by the idea of publishing, or maybe you have a string of failures. The only way out of those places is to write your way out of them.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Fix it later. Just get it down and fix it in post, as they say in the movies.
What are you reading now?
The last book of the Ryria Revelations series by Michael J. Sullivan.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to do a trilogy set on another continent in my world. It’s an old world, Arthurian type era with knights, dukes, and damsels.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A bible, Homeland by R.A. Salvatore, Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson, and Return of the King by Tolkien.
