Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am the author of two books – Elevate Beyond and Elevate Your Network. Elevate Beyond was released after I worked for the Los Angeles Lakers during Kobe Bryant’s final season. I knew I wanted to combine my love for sports with my ability to share a message and once I did that the course of my calling evolved. In addition to writing books and traveling the globe as a motivational speaker, I am the founder of the Professional Basketball Combine which helps basketball players sign their first contract. Above all, I hope to help people pursue their definition of success and happiness!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I wrote Elevate Your Network because I believe that people are the driving force behind success and happiness. The content in this book comes from thousands of interactions and experiences with people from across the globe and I decided to write it because there’s no substitute for human connection. There is no alternative to understanding the importance of relationships and how to create them in a meaningful way. It’s not enough to think about networking or using networking as purely a technique for advancing your career; it’s about building authentic relationships which builds deeper bonds and increases happiness which ultimately leads to creating more success in life.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
One of my favorite authors is Jon Gordon and my favorite book of his is Training Camp. He is so masterful in his ability to share a message through a story. The list goes on but some books I really enjoy are How to Win Friends and Influence People, Delivering Happiness, Shoe Dog, and The Third Door.
What are you working on now?
My big focus at the moment is spreading the message of Elevate Your Network. It’s not enough to just write a good book, I have to live it. Along with the promotion of EYN I am really focused on expanding the Professional Basketball Combine as we head into 2019.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
You can do it. I find it very helpful to break your writing down into periods that are comfortable for you. As a self published author, it’s different because I don’t necessarily have the same deadlines as other authors. No matter what type of author you are, I think it’s important to remember why you are writing your book and the impact you hope to have.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Two pieces of advice have been extremely relevant in my life lately – one from my mom and one from my dad.
“Live in the moment and enjoy the journey.” – Mom
“The only shortcut in life is to START NOW!” – Dad
My mom’s advice is so powerful because it helps me focus on the present and enjoy everything that surrounds me. As someone constantly focused on my goals and ambitions this reminder helps me appreciate the ride. My dad’s advice is incredible because if you want to create success and happiness you need to start now. You need to take actions, no matter how big or small, because there is no substitute for time. Start now and see all you can accomplish over time.
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor as I hope to understand positive psychology more and how to leverage his techniques for building more meaningful relationships.
