Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
James L. Mckinney resides in Hickory, North Carolina and has been writing since 2000. He was reared in Yancey and Mitchell counties in western North Carolina in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. After graduating from high school (Cane River High School) in 1966 he served four years in the US Navy and is a Vietnam veteran. He has spent forty-one years as an active minister and is presently serving as a church pastor. Besides writing Bible books, he has expanded his writings to fiction, including many westerns. All his books are for a family readership. He has eight westerns in a series and is presently working on the ninth. He has written a total of twenty-four books, the last title THE LONG JOURNEY HOME.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Long Journey Home – For years many have tried to solve the mystery of the Brown Mountain Lights seen on Brown Mountain in Burke County, North Carolina. They have drawn visitors from across the continent and internationally. The US government has sent representatives to solve their mystery, yet, they remain unsolved. There are several myths concerning these lights and they have been embedded somewhat in the book by the author who presently lives within fifty miles of them.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Watching mother nature and trying to describe her many moods help widen my imagination.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Zane Grey, Louis L’Amour, Max Brand have influenced my writing of westerns.
What are you working on now?
A western titled The Blacksnake Brand.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have just started promoting my books and haven’t gotten into it yet.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep writing.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write some everyday, even if it doesn’t pertain to the book you are working on.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, a dictionary, a large writing pad and perhaps one of Zane Grey’s books (western).
