Interview With Author James Rosenberg
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi. I am a long-time litigator who writes legal thrillers. I started writing a few years ago when I wrote a short story about my son’s athletic achievements–he hadn’t had many and when he finally got a big hit in a little league game, I was completely inspired. I found that telling relatable stories can inspire others.
I then started writing legal thrillers. Not quite traditional legal thrillers but books that highlight the effects of being a participant in a trial can have on people. Every book has a complete trial in it–from start to finish–so that the reader can get completely engaged in what the litigants have to endure.
I have now written five legal thrillers, all included in my Verdicts and Vindication series.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest is Fatal Reunion which was inspired by the memories of distant summers as a kid and what would happen when a young woman reemerges in the life of a man who life is spiraling out of control.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I try to write for twenty minutes every day. I find that if I can get some words down on paper, ultimately they join together and a story emerges. There is little as satisfying as seeing my characters round into shape, leading to an ending nobody expected.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
John Grisham is my number one influence. He crafts stories about every day people caught up in the law in a believable way that engages the reader from start to finish.
What are you working on now?
I am trying to get back to an unfinished novel about whether there is ever a justifiable reason to commit murder.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My Facebook page seems to generate the most traffic and gets me the most interaction. However, Amazon gets me the most readers and I direct most of my marketing resources towards it.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
If you want to write a book, commit to it. You will never know how good you are until you make yourself sit down and finish your book. Don’t be shy about letting others read it and offer suggestions, but you get to decide which suggestions are worthwhile.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write something every day.
What are you reading now?
Into the Fall by Tamara Mill.
What’s next for you as a writer?
As I get more books completed, I have to decide when it’s time to quit my day job and become a fulltime writer.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
To Kill a Mockingbird, Presumed Innocent, A Time to Kill and Confessions of an Innocent Man
