Interview With Author Janet Fichter
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
From the time I could hold a pencil, I’ve been writing. As a young girl, I felt compelled to create stories and express myself through poetry. It’s no surprise that I became a teacher, with literacy instruction being my favorite subject.
After retiring from a teaching and an instructional coaching career, I’ve spent the past three years writing daily. I have two published books. The first book was published with a traditional publisher. Wanting more control and flexibility, I decided to self-publish the second book.
1. The Ministry of the Unveiled Face, a non-fiction inspirational book on the simplicity of sharing the goodness of Christ with those who don’t yet know Him. The book is carried in a few local bookstores and has been used by several small groups for study and discussion. Each chapter includes reflection questions and sample prayers to pray.
2. Princess Tiara and the Crown of Virtues is a fiction fairy tale adventure. (See below section for more information). This book is also carried in a few local bookstores. Only recently released, I hope to get it in public and school libraries as well.
I also maintain an active website with a blog. I have a monthly author newsletter as well. One can view the website here: https://atjesusfeet.com, and can sign up for the newletter using the website.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The story was actually written years ago for my youngest niece, Tiara. Once retired, I developed the story further. It is a cozy weekend read about an adventurous princess who resists wearing a crown (as she prefers to explore nature). By spending time with her older siblings, she discoveres the importance of virtue. Eventually she receives a crown with a very special gem in the center (and some other jewels I won’t reveal here). She is helped on her journey of discovery by a mystical character who wears a glowing cloak and shows up in the most opportune moments. The book appeals to middle grade and teen readers, but also to parents, teachers and anyone who wants to snuggle up with a meaningful story. In this world of darkness and distress, it is refreshing to read about virtue for a change.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t use a writing desk. I was hit by a car recently and sustained a minor back injury, so I type on my laptop while sitting on the couch (where I can lean back). Also, I’m an early bird, often getting up around 5:00 a.m. to begin my day in prayer and writing. For me, prayer and writing go hand in hand.
What are you working on now?
Though I have a number of “projects” in the works, the one I’m spending the most amount of time on is the sequel to the Princess Tiara and the Crown of Virtues story. The sequel brings in more depth of conflict as well as a great deal of symbolism. I hope it will be a more devleoped fantasy novel.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I champion the local Christian bookstore owners, especially Shades of Divine in Brighton, Colorado. I am blessed that the owner of that gift and bookstore is desirous of supporting local authors.
I also have an author page using many social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter). I’m continually investigating and looking for new avenues to “spread the word”.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Focus on the message and enjoy the writing process. Don’t get caught up in too many “highly recommended” practices (though you should be aware of them). If you lose the love of writing by feeling pressured to do things the recommended way, it will be a great loss.
That said, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Joining a small writer’s group is a great support.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
From my father: If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way (I think this is actually a Mother Teresa quote).
From my mother: Do your best and trust God for the rest.
From Dr. Charles Stanley (In Touch Ministries): Fight your battles on your knees.
What are you reading now?
I love reading pieces written by my author friends. I enjoy beta reading for others and feel honored to support them. Beyond that, I’m reading a lot of Dutch Sheets, a spiritual mentor.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Once I finish the sequel to the Princess Tiara story, I have several non-fiction pieces in the works. I desperately need to get back to them. I’m not sure if they will be published books or simply a series of articles. We’ll see what develops.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would take the Bible, for sure, for the layers and layers of depth in it will inspire me into eternity.
I would also take Oswald Chamber’s “My Utmost for His Highest” (again… so much inpirational thoughts).
I would bring my laptop in the hopes I can access some adventure and historical fiction stories.
