Interview With Author Janice Pilson
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My career in higher education was just getting underway when online learning came on the scene. I got involved early on, which meant that my university sent me to several conferences each year to keep up with the newly emerging learning environment. I would use a day or two of vacation to coincide with the conference I I always had a few days to explore the area, which satisfied my love of day trips. I was fortunate enough to have that career perk throughout my career, so I have explored at least a little section of more than half the states in the country
My first book was on Georgia day trips, listing interesting places to enjoy in just one day from any of the five major cities in Georgia–Atlanta, Augusta, Macon, Savannah, and Valdosta. The guide provides driving times, cost/fees, dog policies, activities and more for each location. Since then I have written a Florida day trip book and a second edition to the Georgia day trip adventure book.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Florida Day Trip Adventures: The Spontaneous Person’s Guide to a Well-Planned Day of Fun in Florida. Growing up in Florida in the 1960’s, I was used to uncrowded beaches, kitschy attractions, and unspoiled nature. Florida today is overrun with glitzy theme parks, crowded beaches, and high rises that obstruct the view of the water. I wrote the Florida Day Trip Adventures book to help guide people to the old Florida that still exists beyond the manicured entrances and glitzy advertising.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My desire to travel the back roads was probably most inspired by the book, On the Road, by Jack Kerouac.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a day trip book for Oregon. While in the Army stationed in Tacoma, Washington I spent a lot of time in Oregon, particularly along its beautiful coast. Additionally, I was able to visit many parts of Oregon through my work.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you can imagine it, you can do it.
