Interview With Author Janice Rostron
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a Professional Organizer and the owner/operator of Just Focus and Reorganize, LLC (JFR). I have written one book (so far!).
I started playing guitar as a shy, introverted 12-year-old. In my late twenties, I tackled my stage fright and joined a band. I have played shows throughout California and has recorded two full-length albums and one EP (during which time I earned the moniker “Janice F’n Reid” a.k.a. “JFR”).
I received a BA in Legal Studies (with a minor in Music) from UC Berkeley and have since joined the Cal Alumni Association. GO BEARS! I then earned an MEd and a Multiple Subject teaching credential from UCLA. I worked as a public elementary school teacher for eight years before deciding to pursue a career in Professional Organizing.
I am an active member of the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO). I have earned NAPO Specialist Certificates in Workplace Productivity and Team Productivity. I served as the Los Angeles chapter’s Treasurer for the 2016–2017 term. I was the leader of NAPO’s Environmentally-Conscious Organizers special interest group for the 2020–2023 terms.
I am also a subscriber to the Institute for Challenging Disorganization (ICD) and have earned a Level II Chronic Disorganization Specialist Certificate.
I love working one-on-one with my clients and enjoys speaking to groups about organization and productivity.
In 2022, I moved to Denver to grow the business … and purchase my first home.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My book is called Time Is Power: Create Space for What Matters Most. It was inspired by my desire to NOT burn out in my new career/life as I had as an elementary school teacher. In 2015, I not only started my own Professional Organizing company and I met my now husband. I was determined to learn from my past mistakes so I would have the time and energy for all the important pieces of my life and still have time for myself as well. Then, I perfected the systems over a decade of working closely with organizing clients that were experiencing overwhelm as well.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know if it is unusual, but I do my best writing in the afternoon.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Getting Things Done by David Allen
Atomic Habits by James Clear
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on promoting my book as well as the corresponding productivity sessions that I offer.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Social media and my own website are my best methods for promoting my book.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t get overwhelmed by the amount of stuff there is to do to write, publish, and promote a book. Whatever the next step is, commit it to your calendar, and focus on that. Then, do the same for the next step. And so on…
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t overcomplicate things.
What are you reading now?
Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg
What’s next for you as a writer?
I am just in the brainstorming phase of an environmentally-conscious organizing book.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A book of short stories by Edgar Allan Poe
A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
A book of poetry by T. S. Eliot
