Interview With Author Janith Hooper
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an author of mid 20th century Christian Western Romances. I grew up on a ranch in northern California, so I know and write about ranch and farm life. I live with my husband of fifty-one years in Oakdale, California—Cowboy Capital of the World. I have four grown sons, three daughters-in-law, and six grandchildren with one on the way. It was after raising our four sons that God directed my path to writing novels. I’ve written A Quaking Heart trilogy and A Breath Without Life series. So far, 8 published books.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Let Your Lives Begin Again (A Breath Without Life Novel – Book Five). This book was a little more involved and inspired by our youngest son who had been plagued by alcoholism for years. Though the story is adventurous and has two love stories with a happy ending for the identical twin protagonist heros, it also has a serious side to it. So far it has proven to be helpful to families with loved ones who struggle with the same disease, as well.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I can only write a few hours a day since I get sleepy, then I can’t get my brain to concentrate anymore. At that point I have to move to marketing tasks. Also, I like silence or background music only when I write. I will listen to a couple of inspirational songs, but then they have to go off for me to write.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Oh my, a ton of authors have inspired me. It’s hard to pin down one or two. Probably Francine Rivers and Liz Curtis Higgs are two of my most favored authors. I met them in person and have pictures with them from the Mt. Hermon Writer’s Conference in California, years ago. It was wonderful.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on Let Yourself Be Whole Again (A Breath Without Life Novel – Book Six). This is the final book in this series. It’s fun to write since I left my most exciting male protagonist until the end. But I also feel the weight of responsibility since it will wrap up the series as well as the sabotage that has run through all six books.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
The most successful ongoing method to advertise that I’ve found so far are Facebook ads. Also BookBub Featured Deals (if you can get one) bring tremendous success in promoting a book.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
If you are serious about writing and publishing, then do yourself a favor and go all in. Go to writer’s conferences, read tons of books on the craft of writing, tune into webinars, write everyday (at least a paragraph a day), learn, learn, learn. Then write, write, write.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Pay a professional to edit your books, and design your covers.
What are you reading now?
Francine Rivers’, The Lady’s Mine.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I am currently writing the 6th and final book of my A Breath Without Life series (my 9th book all together). Once that series is done, I will begin my 3rd series.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible
Heaven Texas by Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers
Ride With Me by Janith Hooper
